On February 17, 2023, a doctoral student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Sharakhmetov Sayat defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) on the topic: «Fish assemblages and state of fish populations in the Alakol watershed» in the specialty "8D08401 - Fish Industry and Industrial Fishery". The presented defense of the dissertation is the first in our republic in this specialty.

12 members of the dissertation council, 2 official reviewers, the domestic scientific adviser, Associate Professor of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources, Candidate of Biological Sciences Mamilov Nadir and foreign scientific adviser, leading researcher of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Institute of Biology of Inland Waters. I.D. Papanin» Levin Boris (Borok, Russia) took part in the defense. The defense was successful, the dissertation council highly appreciated the dissertation work and unanimously decided to award Sharakhmetov Sayat the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

On 02/09/2023, 1st year students held an open educational hour on the topic "Combating climate change" in terms of sustainable development goals.  Students shared their thoughts on combating climate change.  He noted that climate change is one of the most important global problems for mankind with important environmental, social, economic and political aspects.  Increasing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, degradation of organic waste in landfills, burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) in power plants and internal combustion engines were cited as a few of the main reasons.  He explained the climate change in Kazakhstan on the example of the Aral Sea.  Natural disasters, changes in the distribution of precipitation as a consequence of climate change for humanity, effects on human health, etc. have been reported.  The students came to the conclusion that everyone should take responsibility for combating climate change and implementing government programs to protect the environment.

Smekenov Izat Temirgaliyevich in December 2022 became the owner of a award for young talented scientists of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was today awarded a diploma from the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek for his success and achievements in the field of science.

On February 3, 2023, the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an international round table on sustainable development goals (SDGs) "Genetic technologies in crop production". The event was attended by domestic and foreign scientists, teachers and students, master students.

On January 27, 2023, PhD doctoral student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of the Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi, defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Orazov Aidyn on the topic: “ Populations study of rare and endemic species Almond Ledebour (Amygdalus ledebouriana Schltdl.) in conditions of Eastern Kazakhstan" in the specialty "6D061300 - Geobotany". 12 members of the dissertation council, 2 official reviewers, domestic scientific supervisors, Professor of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Mukhitdinov Nashtai and Professor, Ph.D. Turuspekov Yerlan, took part in the defense. Foreign scientific supervisor Professor of the University of Debrecen, PhD Shramko Gabor (Debrecen, Hungary). The defense was successful and the dissertation council unanimously voted for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by 100%. On January 26, 2023 at the 409 conference room of the scientific library of al-Farabi Kazakh National University an international round-table in a hybrid format "Interdisciplinary research of natural processes: reality and prospects", dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Associate Professor of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, a specialist in the field of genetics and biostatistics, co-author of the first republican tests on biology Biyasheva Zarema Maratovna took place.

On January 20-21, al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosts a scientific and practical conference on the topic "Development of research in universities as a necessary condition for the innovative development of Кazakhstan".
