According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals: 2 Elimination of hunger, where research is carried out and issues of ensuring food security and improving nutrition are resolved, as well as ensuring sustainable development of agriculture,  on 11.10.2023 an event on the topic: “Will GMOs save the world from hunger?” was organized at the Department of Biotechnology  with students of the specialty Biotechnology under the leadership of Professor Atabaeva S.D., c.b.s.  Mukhataeva K.A., c.b.s. Ultanbekovi G.D.

Goal: raising awareness among students about the possibilities of using GMOs to eliminate hunger.

Tasks:

 • Introduce students to the ideas of GMOs

  • Consider the potential of GMOs to solve hunger problems

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of GMOs.

A very informative presentation was prepared by students of the BT-20-02R group, who used various visual materials such as diagrams and tables of GMOs and GMPs.  They answered questions in the open air and held discussions on all topics and there was great interest from all participants.

An informative brochure was prepared on the topic «GMOs: Ending Hunger», which included a brief description of the pros and cons of GMOs.  Also under the QR code there was a link to a short survey of faculty students and articles also written by students of our faculty.  According to the survey results, students are generally positive about the use of GMOs to solve hunger problems; GMOs can help increase crop yields, make them more resistant to pests and diseases, and also increase their nutritional value.

The brochures that were distributed to students help them understand the pros and cons of GMOs and help raise students' awareness of GMOs and their potential to solve hunger problems.

  Recommendations:

  • Events should be held regularly to increase students' awareness of GMOs, GMPs and GMI in general.

  • In the future, it is possible to change the possibility of holding open lessons at other faculties of KazNU Al-Farabi, as well as at a school in Almaty.
