World Kidney Day was first celebrated in March, 2006. Since then World Kidney Day is observed annually on the 2nd Thursday in March. Establishment, organization and annual holding of this event was the result of joint efforts of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Renal Fonds. The main goal of the Kidney Day is to attract the attention of international and state organizations to the problem of growing number of people with kidney diseases. Among the objectives of the Day is also the practice exchange in medicine, the development of systems for the prevention of kidney diseases, the quality of patient care improvement, new drugs and medical devices development for the nephrologic diseases treatment. According to WHO, the number of patients with diseases of the renal system is about 10% of the world's population, and this figure is growing unfortunately. There are several simple ways to reduce the risk of kidney disease. At the Faculty of Medicine, World Kidney Day was solemnized by students' reports on the prevention of kidney diseases, kidney diseases symptoms awareness in the early and late stages, people at potential risk, factors of improving the quality of life.

1. Lead an active way of life.

2. Control the level of sugar in the blood. Approximately half of people with diabetes develop chronic kidney disease, so such patients should regularly undergo a kidney examination (at least once a year)

3. Control blood pressure. Hypertension is the most common cause of kidney damage

4. Control the body weight. Try to reduce the salt consumption up to 5 grams per day

5. Drink at least 1-1.5 liters of water a day. Do not replace water with juice or sweet fizzy drinks. Drinking enough water reduces the risk of kidney stones

6. Do not smoke. Nicotine reduces blood flow in the kidneys, which leads to a decrease in their function. In addition, smoking increases the risk of kidney cancer

7. Do not take medication without doctor's prescription. Some of them have a nephrotoxic side effect
