Dear Colleagues!

We are pleased to invite you to the pre-defense of doctoral student of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Serik Samigullovich Bakiev with the topic “Construction of bacteriophage endolysins and assessment of their effectiveness in inactivating bacterial pathogens of sturgeon fish”!

The pre-defense will take place on October 6 at 11:00 in room 322.

Growing sturgeon fish in aquaculture conditions contributes to the conservation of biological diversity of ichthyofauna, and is also aimed at the production of fish and fish products. Thanks to the creation of optimal growing conditions, the period of mass accumulation and sexual maturation of sturgeon fish is significantly reduced. In this regard, there has been a significant increase in the development of sturgeon aquaculture. However, the development of aquaculture is accompanied by risks caused by bacterial pathogens. For example, pathogens of the genus Aeromonas and Pseudomonas are characterized by 100% mortality in fish. Antibiotics and bacteriophages used today become ineffective due to the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria and the development of resistance mechanisms to infection by phages. In this regard, new solutions are needed to combat drug-resistant bacterial pathogens; in the research of Serik Samigullovic, endolysins became this solution. Due to the activity of endolysins, the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall is destroyed and the bacterium dies. This method has proven its effectiveness and can be used in aquaculture conditions.
