The purpose of the Master's ЕР

High-quality training of scientific and educational personnel in the field of cartography for specialized research institutes, universities, research and production organizations and associations, national and regional cartographic and geodetic funds, government agencies and relevant ministries. The implementation of the program is aimed at the formation of specialists capable of:

- solve the problems of cartographic modeling and forecasting;

- interpret the results of the analysis of Earth remote sensing data for their use in various sectors of life and activity of society;

- integrate modern methods and techniques of related scientific fields in their own scientific and applied research;

- to substantiate the necessity and evidence base of cartographic monitoring of natural and man-made risks in the implementation of regional economic development programs;

- to increase the efficiency of the scientific and educational process by providing innovative mapping methods;

- to build their own program of further education and research activities

Learning outcomes

Expected learning outcomes:

1. - to use modern scientific knowledge of cartographic modeling of spatial systems of various territorial ranks and classifications in the educational practice of higher education;

- to introduce the integration of knowledge in cartographic modeling into the scientific system of geoinformation mapping;

- to build a factor analysis of the formation of integrative directions in the theory and methodology of modern cartography.

2. - use the data of remote sensing of the Earth in the analysis of research objects by means of computer technology;

- purposefully choose the necessary system of knowledge and interdisciplinary methods of cartographic modeling when planning scientific and applied research and educational process;

- formulate the level of development of domestic cartography, its potential and growth opportunities.

3. - to build a logical matrix of the legend when designing cartographic works of various purposes and scales;

- apply information technologies to solve cartography problems, analyze and forecast the development of mapped objects and phenomena;

- correctly build the methodology of cartographic analysis and design, taking into account the general methodology of scientific research.

4. - use cartographic information in the analysis and solution of problems of regional spatial systems;

- to apply the technology of digital modeling of spatial systems in the implementation of interdisciplinary educational and research projects;     - effectively choose software when designing cartographic works and analyzing satellite images.

5. - demonstrate the application of innovative methods and promising trends of modern cartography in the planning of scientific and educational programs;

- formulate the problems, goals and objectives of modern cartography when building an educational strategy;

- to use a differentiated approach when choosing the types of cartographic modeling of the structure and dynamics of various spatial systems (geosystems).

6. - to characterize the factors of changes in the structure and dynamics of spatial systems and to build their predictive cartographic models;

- visualize the natural and man-made risks of spatial systems, their environmental and socio-economic consequences for society.

7. - to give a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of existing global navigation satellite systems for cartography;

- formulate and substantiate the basics of local, regional, national cartographic monitoring;

- classify the methods of cartographic modeling using various environmental monitoring and control systems.

8. - to make forecast maps of natural and man-made risks for making management decisions;

- to update and apply digital technologies when updating the geodetic, toponymic and substantive basis of topographic maps in the adopted system of a scale series;

- to formulate the main problems of the theory and methodology of mapping of regional and national scales, the reasons for their sublimation in connection with the development of domestic cartography.

9. - demonstrate the development of new ideas and technological techniques of spatial cartographic modeling and applied aspects of their effective use;

- formulate, based on the results of cartographic analysis, the content and factors of the formation of natural and man-made risks of local, regional and state scale;

- to assess and predict natural and man-made risks and their environmental and socio-economic consequences for society and for geographical systems.

10. - generalize and give a comparative assessment of the results of complex and thematic monitoring in the cartographic analysis of spatial systems;

- formulate the basics of regional and national cartographic monitoring of the environment and ways to implement monitoring systems to monitor the ecological state of geosystems;

- define the conceptual foundations of programming in ENVI, ArcGIS, ArcMap, ERDAS, Serfer and others systems.

11.- design thematic and large-scale series of forecast maps for economic planning and management decision-making;

- to integrate and give a comparative assessment of the content, volume, capabilities and availability of various sources of information in thematic mapping;

- evaluate traditional and innovative methods and methods of spatial modeling with different volumes of cartographic information;

- to present the results of research in a professional environment, to justify the choice of mapping methods, the results of the main provisions of the cartographic project.

12. - to argue the scientific results and conclusions of their own research and production work;

- demonstrate readiness for independent research work in the field of cartographic design and forecasting based on modern digital programs;

- critically evaluate the results and conclusions of both their own research and production work, and the work of other researchers.

Academic activities under the educational program are implemented:

- within the framework of existing regulatory documents and methodological recommendations in the field of higher education in the field of geodetic, cartographic and geographical sciences;

- as a result of the implementation of regulatory documents regulating the educational and methodological process at the university;

- generalization and dissemination of new normative legal acts concerning methodological work;

- through the current and long-term planning of the educational and methodological work of the university; coordination of the educational and methodological complex (UMKD) of the discipline of the department for compliance with normative legal acts, working curricula and educational programs;

- monitoring the provision of the educational process with teaching materials, documenting the results;

- development of teaching materials; development and implementation of the working curriculum

Scientific Service

To implement the ЕР «7M07302 – Cartography» at the Faculty and Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics there is an Educational and Laboratory Cartographic Center (ULCC), which includes:

- laboratory of geoinformation mapping;

- Remote sensing laboratory;

- Geodesy and Cartography Laboratory;

- Сenter for Geoinformatics and young scientists;

- Сenter for receiving and archiving operational meteorological information;

- Geocamera. 

Personnel training in the OP "7M07302 - Cartography" is carried out for the following areas of scientific activity:

-     republican and regional problems of modern mapping of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

-     dangerous natural and man-made phenomena and processes, their forecast and mapping;

-     recreational assessment and mapping of the regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

-     mapping of water and air basins of regions and large cities of Kazakhstan;

-     cartographic service of various areas of the economy.

International service

   Academic mobility of students in the Master's degree program of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is carried out within the framework of interuniversity agreements/agreements or joint projects: a tripartite agreement/agreement of the student, sending and receiving university for internal academic mobility and an invitation for external academic mobility

   Undergraduates undergo research internships at leading universities in the world, and, in particular, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA, Texas A&M University, other universities in the USA, as well as Germany, Austria and Hungary. The internship gives undergraduates the opportunity to study professional courses in depth, improve English, and work in scientific laboratories.

   Teachers of the educational program undergo internships abroad, educational courses, exchange experience, acquire new competencies in accordance with modern directions of research work.
