October 24, 2023 Academic regional resource center for information about the UN at the Faculty of International Relations of KazNU jointly with the UN Department of Global Communications representative office in Almaty, held an international round table “The Role of the UN in the 21st Century” in Almaty, dedicated to UN Day. The round table was held in the UN Plaza building in Almaty, which was symbolic for the participants.

During the round table, there were presented reports and speeches on the role of the UN in resolving modern conflicts, the implementation of 17 sustainable goals and the contribution of youth to this process. The initiatives and contribution of modern youth to the activities of the UN and the promotion of 17 sustainable development goals were also discussed.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Vlastimil Samek, representative of the UN Department of Global Communications in Almaty and Leila Delovarova, director of the Academic Regional Resource Center for Information about the UN. The event was also attended by representatives of the “American Councils” - Daria Zelenukhina and students of the program for in-depth study of the Russian language and local history. During the round table, Azamat Ayaguzov, supervisor of the UN Security Operations Center, presented experience of Kazakhstan’s UN peacekeeping forces and answered students’ questions regarding this topic.

Students of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University made presentations highlighting various aspects of the UN role of in modern conditions. In their speeches, participants gave examples of youth participation in solving modern problems and promoting 17 SDGs and proposed new initiatives.

All participants in the round table expressed wishes for further cooperation in building a better future, as noted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “an integral part of which will be peace, sustainable development and human rights for all.”
