The goal of the program is to train highly qualified interpreters in the field of international and legal relations who can perform high-quality translation of public speeches at major international conferences, using two or more languages in the field of international and legal relations, scientific, technical and cultural life.

The educational program on specialty "7M02304 - Translation business in international and legal relations" is new and not accredited.

For implementation of educational program there are the following laboratories at the International Relations Faculty:

  3. To use translation recording techniques for consecutive translation effectively; apply text compression techniques; overcome psychological and emotional stress in two-way translation;

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. apply methodological principles and translation strategies to achieve adequate consecutive translation;

2. apply and develop a technique for developing attention, perception of oral texts of different genres in a foreign language;

3. substantiate theoretically the main ways to achieve equivalence in translation;

4. apply mnemonics and logical operations;

5. train working memory in order to increase the amount of memorized information based on the method of memorizing text by key elements;

6. analyze extralinguistic factors of intercultural communication between native speakers and non-native speakers of a foreign language to create an adequate intercultural dialogue;

7. theoretically substantiate the ethical and moral norms of behavior in a foreign culture society;

8. create and apply effective ways to overcome the influence of stereotypes for the implementation of intercultural dialogue in the general and professional spheres of communication and the translation process.

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. apply methodological principles and translation strategies to achieve adequate consistent translation;

2. apply and develop techniques for developing attention, perception of different genre oral texts in a foreign language;

3. justify main ways theoretically to achieve equivalence in consecutive translation;

4. apply mnemonics and logical operations;

5. train their long-term memory in order to increase volume of stored information based on method of memorizing text by key elements;

6. analyze extralinguistic factors of intercultural communication between native and non-native speakers of a foreign language to create an adequate intercultural dialogue;

7. explain ethical and moral norms of behavior theoretically in a foreign cultural society;

8. create and apply effective ways to overcome influence of stereotypes for implementation of intercultural dialogue in general and professional spheres of communication and translation process.

М-4 Organizing and planning of research in the field of translation, peculiarities of writing diplomatic protocols

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. apply the acquired knowledge of intercultural communication in the practice of translation within the framework of a particular topic studied;

2. analyze the features of economic and legal translations in the field of international and legal relations;

3. develop ways to achieve the adequacy of translation, types of lexical, grammatical and complex transformations from the point of view of modern theory and practice of translation and intercultural communication;

4. use the techniques of compression, probabilistic forecasting, methods of transferring terms, frequency translation correspondences, clichés, translation notation techniques, modern information technology tools;

5. perform oral translation in compliance with the norms of lexical equivalence, grammatical, syntactic and stylistic norms of the translated text and temporal characteristics of the source text;

6. explain the relationship between translation and intercultural communication;

7. analyze the main scientific theories of intercultural communication and the development of intercultural competence;

8. conduct linguistic and stylistic studies of the source text and the translation text.

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. apply the basics of the theory and practice of simultaneous translation to solve problems and difficulties in simultaneous translation from one language to another;

2. use simultaneous translation equipment in accordance with the rules of conduct in a simultaneous booth; follow the ethics of a simultaneous interpreter;

3. systematically develop perceptual qualities, attention, memory, thinking and resistance to intense mental stress to ensure the highest possible quality of simultaneous translation;

4. analyze the specifics of speaking in public, mastery of the audience and the phonetic design of the translation text (articulation, intonation, tempo, loudness) and practice them;

5. plan and organize project activities to effectively solve translation problems of varying complexity;

6. develop acquired knowledge and skills in practical activities and everyday life: to communicate with representatives of other countries, orientation in the modern multicultural world; demonstrate the skills of simultaneous consecutive translation of international forums and negotiations;

7. translate written and oral types of professional materials from a foreign language into Kazakh/Russian and from Kazakh/Russian into a foreign language through the improvement of translation skills and techniques

М-6 Translation of juridical documents and negotiations  

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. In compliance with international standards of speech etiquette and professional ethics of an interpreter, use the professional level of communicative receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking and writing) skills in a foreign language for successful and high-quality translation of a speaker's speech during an international conference;

2. perform oral and written translation of economic and legal texts for professional translation activities.

3. apply various translation techniques in order to achieve equivalence in the translation of economic and legal texts

4. perform interpreting in the field of business communication, taking into account the specifics of conducting business negotiations in a foreign language;

5. to distinguish the specifics of the process of simultaneous translation from one language to another during international conferences and other international events;

6. perform and use the author's analysis of political terms and words of famous politicians for the implementation of high-quality interpretation of international political negotiations;

7. translate business and diplomatic documents;

8. perform interpreting in the field of business communication, taking into account the specifics of business negotiations in a foreign language.

M-6 Translation as an object of linguistic studies

After successful completion of this module, postgraduates must be able to:

1. use techniques of abbreviated translation recording when performing consecutive interpretation for accurate reproduction of information in the source text

2. apply methods of fixing and transmitting modality in the translation text, generally accepted designations of monetary units, countries and minerals.

3. analyze linguistic markers of social relations and markers of human speech characteristics;

4. distinguish features of terminology translation in the oil and gas sector to implement equivalent translation;

5. conduct scientific and technical correspondence in foreign and native languages;

6. apply abstract and interpretation of texts on the issues of oil industry;

7. carry out constant information and search work to expand active stock of translation correspondences;

8. translate business documents and correspondence and present business information using information, computer and network technologies.

4. Requirements for applicants

 

Admission rules: admission to master's programs of al-Farabi Kazakh National University is carried out according to the Standard rules for admission to study in educational organizations that implement professional training programs of postgraduate education, approved by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 19, 2012 No. 109.

University bachelor program "6B020700-Translation" is the foundation for training within master's program "7M02304 - Interpreter in the field of international and legal relations". Those who have mastered professional training programs of higher education can apply foe this master's program.

Documents for admission to the master's program are accepted only if there are appropriate prerequisites mastered by applicants at the previous level of education.

Citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan who have a foreign language certificate (English, French, German) including:

Test of English as a Foreign Language Institutional Testing Programm (TOEFL ITP), (TOEFL, пороговый балл – не менее 560),

International English Language Tests System (IELTS, threshold score – not less than 6.0),

Grundbaustein DaF (threshold score - С 1),

Deutsche Sprachprfungfurden Hochschulzugang (DSH, threshold score - С 1),

Diplomed' Etudesen Langue français (DELF, threshold score - В 2), Diplome Approfondi de Langue français (DALF, threshold score - С 1),

Тest de connaisances de français (TCF, threshold score - not less than 400),

are exempt from the entrance exam in a foreign language.

The list of prerequisites for this specialty is approved by University Scientific and Methodological Council.

Applicants for admission to the master's program pass the entrance exam in their specialty and entrance exam in one of foreign languages (English, German, French). The decision to pass the master's entrance exam in other foreign languages (Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, Japanese and others) is made by the Admission Committee of al-Farabi Kazakh National University in agreement with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan individually.
