MEMORIAL DAY OF MAHATMA GANDHI WAS ORGANIZED

Today the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of “non-violence,” and the tremendous impact this form of social response has had all over the world in the last century. On the International Day of Non-Violence, created by the United Nations in 2007, we look back on the influence of an Indian activist born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but known the world over as Mahatma Gandhi. The International Day of Non-Violence honors how Gandhi’s work and legacy has impacted global, non-violent protest.

On this occasion, the Gandhi Jayati event dedicated to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi was held in the M. Gandhi Park in Almaty, organized by the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of the Middle East and South Asia, Indian studies department and representatives of the Consulate of India in Almaty. During the event, Mr. Amit Kumar Mishra, Consul of the Indian Mission in Almaty, and Dariga Kokeyeva, Head of the Department of the Middle East and South Asia of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, congratulated the people of India on this holiday and expressed warm wishes to the guests gathered in the park. In addition, students of the Department of Indology read the aphorisms of the national leader of India, Mahatma Gandhi.
