International round table "Kazakhstan's way to the antinuclear world"

UN Assistance Centre at the international relations department of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, International charitable public Fund “Poligon – 29 August”, which has roster consultative status at the Economic and Social Council of the UN, with the support of the mission of the UN Department of Public Information in Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty) held an international round table devoted to theme “Kazakhstan’s way to the antinuclear world” on September 19, 2017.

Al-Farabi KazNU is a global hub for sustainable development which is under the UN “Academic Impact” initiative and conducts active work aimed at supporting ten internationally accepted principles of the UN relating to human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution.

The round table was devoted to the UN International day of peace and the UN International day for the comprehensive elimination of nuclear weapons as well as to the 26th anniversary of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to close the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (SNTS).

During the round table there were discussed such issues as the activities of Kazakhstan as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Kazakhstan's experience in promoting initiatives on nuclear disarmament, some aspects of cooperation with leading international organizations and countries on nuclear non-proliferation, as well as contemporary issues and prospects for strengthening non-proliferation and prohibition of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Representatives of the Diplomatic corps, international organizations accredited in Kazakhstan, participants of the tests at SNTS, NGOs and the academic community took part in the work of the round table.

The round table was opened by the Dean of the faculty of international relations Aidarbayev Sagyngali Zholamanovich, who noted in his welcoming speech the importance of this event in anticipation of the International day of peace in the context of the activities of Kazakhstan as non-permanent member of the UN security Council.

A welcoming speech was also made by Boztaev Nurlan Keshrimovich, a chairman of the Public Fund “Poligon – 29 August”. Boztaev K. N. said about the general activities of the Fund and urged the younger generation to the mainstream of nuclear non-proliferation.

Representatives of the diplomatic corps also made a greeting and a farewell.

Arenova Almasha Arystanovna, advisor of the Political group at the Representation of the MFA RK, in her speech thanked the organizers and participants of the round table for the event and wished successful work and completed her performance with a wonderful, very affecting poem of her own composition, dedicated to the Kazakh victims of nuclear tests of the Semipalatinsk test site.

A representative of the Embassy of Azerbaijan, Nizami Rustamov, in his welcoming speech noted the importance of Kazakhstan in the context of new challenges and threats.

The main speakers were G. F. Dubovcev, chief scientific officer of KISI of President of RK (Almaty) and Murat Akhmetov, representative of the National nuclear centre of RK, the former director of the Institute of Radiation safety in 1998-2002, Kurchatov.

Dubovcev G. F. in his report “Contemporary problems of nuclear non-proliferation regime and RK initiatives to strengthen” said the main problematic aspects of the existing regime, emphasized the role and contribution of Kazakhstan, as well as the possible prospects for the Treaty on non-proliferation.

Akhmetov M. in his speech highlighted the practical aspects of nuclear non-proliferation problems and main difficulties in liquidation of the nuclear tests consequences of the Semipalatinsk test site after two decades of closure.

Historian Maral Topiev in his comments noted a number of nuclear tests in Kazakhstan, which is an important milestone in the tragic history of our country.

Dauren Aben, the expert of the Eurasian research institute, in his commentary noted a number of important factors of problems, indicating the need for the development of research within domestic and international expert community.

The round table was summed by Vlastimil Samek , the head of the Department of public information of the UN in RK (Almaty). In his speech, Mr. Samek thanked all participants for their fruitful work, as well as the UN Assistance Centre for the organization and highlighted the role of al-Farabi KazNU as the hub of UNAI.

The round table was held in a productive working environment.
