    The Alash figures were the first to lay the foundations of linguistics as an original and Russian branch of Kazakh science.  The reason for this was that, of all national characteristics, it was logical to choose the most outstanding phenomenon, such as language, reflecting the character of the people, past and present.  The Alash intelligentsia, who felt and saw not only political and military pressure, but also the spiritual dominance of Russian colonialism, considered and valued the language as a powerful means of preserving the nation and shamelessly served it.  During the reign of the khanate, the language was an instrument of power and rhetoric, leadership and resistance in the nineteenth century under colonial rule.
