In the period from November 22 to 24, 2023 in the city of Almaty held an International Scientific and Practical Conference dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the State Agency "Kazselezaschita" on the theme: "Mudflow security - 50 years of Kazselezaschita activity: status and prospects". More than 70 representatives of scientific organizations and emergency agencies from all over the world gathered in Almaty to discuss important issues such as state policy in the CIS countries to ensure mudflow safety, engineering protection from mudflows, preventive mudflow protection works, mudflow hazard monitoring, as well as the development of theoretical and scientific and methodological foundations for the study of mudflows, and much more.

The conference was organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, State Agency "Kazselezaschita", "Institute of Geography and Water Security" LLP, Mudflow Association, GLOFCA project, Center for Emergency Situations and Risk Reduction, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

In her speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Al-Farabi KazNU, Associate Professor Aliya Aktymbaeva expressed warm wishes to the staff of the State Agency "Kazselezaschita", noting the effective activity of departments of Kazselezaschita at the international level in the coordination of technical solutions for the construction and design of complexes of mudflow protection structures, organization of mudflow protection measures in high mountain conditions, the implementation of unique field and numerical experiments to study the movement of mudflow and protection of national economic objects from mudflows.

We would like to note that the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi is constantly involved in training in hydrometeorology, geo-ecology, cartography and other demanded specialists and our graduates make a significant contribution to the performance of Kazselezaschita.

- Kapitsa V.G., Shahgedanova M., Donskikh D., Saidalieva Z., Musina A.K., Raimbekova Z.T., Kasenov M.K., Mamadjanova G. on "Assessment of mudflow activity in the northern Tien Shan: trends, thresholds and tools for practical application".

Our professors shared advanced methods of prediction and assessment of mudflow risks, as well as discussed modern methods of information and communication technologies application in this field. Together we strive to create a safe environment and advance science for future generations!
