Scientific-research work in the department is conducted in accordance with the "Concept of science Al-Farabi Kazakh National University" and the strategy of the Geography and Nature management faculty and is based on deepening the integration of the educational process with research based on effective use of the latest innovative technology of research.

Staff of the meteorology and hydrology department are successfully carry out scientific-research work in the water objects fields - the formation of regime, mathematical modeling of processes occurring in it, forecast hazards phenomena (floods, high water and etc.), calculations of hydrological characteristics in the economic use of water objects, the ecological condition reservoirs.

- Hydrology of mountain areas of Kazakhstan;

- Hydrological problems of inland basins;

- Transboundary problems of the Kazakhstan Republic;

- Hydroecological problems of the Kazakhstan Republic;

- Evaluation and prediction of water resources of Kazakhstan.

Meteorology field

- Spatial and temporal patterns of change in climatic potential air pollution in different seasons;

- Features of the atmospheric circulation and distribution of the mean monthly temperature and precipitation in the south of Kazakhstan;

- Climatic features of the precipitation regime in Kazakhstan;

- Study of the peculiarities of formation of fog, thunderstorms, hail in different regions of Kazakhstan;

- The possibility of using solar and wind energy in Kazakhstan;

- Variability of agroclimatic resources of Kazakhstan in terms of global warming;

- Recreational climate assessment cities of Kazakhstan.

Scientific development of department used by students, undergraduates, PhD- students. The obtained research results are used in educational practice, develop training courses and programs are used as educational material for training students.
