Open lecture "Agromodeling in Kazakhstan"

Within the framework of the "Ainalandy nұlandyr" program, in order to get more familiar with agrometeorological modeling in Kazakhstan and the process of studying at a foreign university, an online meeting was held with a PhD student of the University of Reading (Great Britain) Suleimenova Saule for students of 2, 3 and 4 courses of the specialty Meteorology (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University).

During the meeting, Saule made a presentation on agrometeorological modeling in the world and in Kazakhstan and also presented the results of her scientific work during her doctoral studies. Thus, Saule introduced the students with the models that are now widely used abroad (Sucros, DSSAT, APSIM and Aquacrop), about the features of each model and the benefits of the data obtained in the result of modeling. After that, Saule spoke about the goals and objectives that she sets for herself during her studies at the University of Reading and showed the results obtained in modeling the soybean crop in South Kazakhstan. Saule, using the Aquacrop model, obtained excellent results when comparing the simulated data with the observed data for 2018. However, she added that further research is needed using data for 2019-2020, which is difficult due to travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the end of the presentation, Saule spoke about studying as a PhD student at the University of Reading, which is the leading university for agrometeorology in the UK. Saule also gave words of parting words to those students who see themselves in science and those who want to continue their studies in as master's and PhD students.

The students, in turn, were grateful to Saule for talking about her project and for sharing her own experience of studying at the University of Reading with them.
