Chair history

The department deals with the actual problems of Kazakh linguistics, diachronic and simultaneous study of the Kazakh language, as well as engaged in the development of philological education, establishes a connection with other sciences.

Department of Kazakh linguistics is one of the most advanced scientific centers of Kazakhstan studying Kazakh linguistics, forming the theoretical basis and contributing to its progressive development. The history of the formation of the department coincides with the initial period of systematization of Kazakh linguistics, as a branch of science. Therefore, the Department plays a significant role in science and in the formation of Kazakh linguistics, as a branch of science.


Since 1943, the department operates as producing department and prepares qualified professionals who are working successfully in various areas of the vast country. Graduates work in schools in Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, higher education institutions and research authorities, on radio and television, in print and in senior government positions.
Specialization: the language of the media, the language of advertising, journalistic style and norm problems of terminology in the media, the new words in the modern Kazakh language, linguistic aspects of a modern Kazakh language, linguistic aspects of translation, and other special courses will be conducted.
Department of Kazakh linguistics is addressing topical issues such as the history of the Kazakh language, problems of Kazakh literary language, phonetics of the modern language, its vocabulary, phraseology, semantics, morphology, word formation, syntax and style of speech.
On the basis of structural explores the history of the written sources of the early period and the Middle Ages, philological laws vocabulary of Turkic languages, etymology and history of word formation, grammar system of modern Kazakh language. Investigated Kazakh idioms in synchronous specification and linguocultural aspect on diachronic and synchronous manner, the pragmatic side of newspaper vocabulary.

Science: Teachers of the department actively participate in research projects:
a) for the project "Priorities functional grammar of Kazakh language: from theory to practice" scientifically proven concept of functional grammar of the Kazakh language in the educational space; In the course of the research project has been comprehensively studied the functionality of linguistic units of the Kazakh language, reflecting the national thinking and mentality of the Kazakh people, was embodied in the modern Kazakh language pronounced national cultural and historical flavor. The results of research are discussed at the international scientific conference "Functional Grammar Kazakh language theory and training methods." Opulbikovany: sample program, textbooks, methodical compilation, collective scientific book, textbook "Functional Grammar of the Kazakh language," the article approved at international and national scientific conferences humanities, in the teaching process of humanitarian faculties;
b) The project "Official language: trends and prospects of development" (2012-2014.) to detect the use of the state language among Russian-speaking population were compiled biographical questions and completed questionnaires on their use; analyzed the methodological base complexes textbooks "Republican coordination-methodical center of development of languages named Sh.Shayahmetova"; analyzed public opinion on the amendments and additions to the draft law "On Language" on the Internet and other media; During the analysis, were identified qualitative composition of specialized terminology in the textbooks of the Kazakh language for professionally-oriented learning in higher education, as well as identifying its scope. Poland, Poznan, Adam Mickiewicz University, China, Beijing, Central University of the Nations, Russia, Moscow, Moscow State Linguistic University (Moscow State Linguistic University), Turks, Istanbul, Marmara University, Uzbekistan, National University of Uzbekistan named after Ulugbek. The best graduates of the department continue their studies in master. Excellent students with master's degrees who are actively involved in research activities, are trained in doctoral PhD and preparing to defend a dissertation on an approved research topic.Chair of Kazakh linguistics is one of the well-known scientific centers of Kazakhstan which studies Kazakh linguistics, forming its theoretical foundations and making contribution to its progressive development. The formation history of Kazakh philology chair is concurred with early period of systematization of Kazakh linguistics, as a branch of science. That's why the chair takes significant part in science and in formation of Kazakh linguistics, as a branch of science.

The chair of Kazakh philology has been training highly qualified specialists of Kazakh language and literature since 1943. It has also been training Kazakh language specialists with high education who successfully work in different spheres of our republic. Graduators of the chair work in Kazakhstan schools and in schools of foreign countries, universities, scientific -investigation centers, radio and television, publishing houses, and at responsible state positions.

75-year-old chair is supported by professors who has made great contribution to development of Kazakh linguistics: doctor of philological science N.T Sauranbaev ( 1954-58years), doctor of philological science, professor M.B Balakaev (1952-1975), doctor of philological science, professor M.T. Tomanov (1980-1989), doctor of philological science, professor M.S. Sergaliev (1990-1998), doctor of philological science, professor T.S. Sairambaev (1998-2001), doctor of philological science, professor G.N. Smagulova (2002-2005), doctor of philological science, professor B.K. Momynova (2005-2008), doctor of philological science, professor B.Sagyndykuly (2008-2009), doctor of philological science, professor B.Shalabai (2009-2010). They had been heads of the chairs in different periods. Doctor of philological science, professor B.K.Momynova has been head of the chair since 2010.

During the Great war most of great outstanding scientists as academician of Academy of science I.I. Meshaninov, correspondent member of USSR Science academy S.E. Malov and Ubriatova had made great contribution to improve collective work. Scientists of Turkic studies N.A. Baskakov, E.R. Tenishev, V.M. Nasilov, A.N. Nadzhip had lectured on the main problems of Turkic studies. Candidate of philological science Y.E. Mamanov, candidates of philological science, associate professors R.M.Mullina, A.T. Toleuov (1945-56), B.K.Manasbaev, G.A. Abukhanov ( Aktobe, Rector of Oral pedagogical institute), senior teachers G.B.Begaliev, M.O. Omarov, B. A. Akshalov, S.B. Bisaliev, founder of methodological science on Kazakh language candidates of philological science, associate professor Sh.H. Sarybaev, senior teachers H. Azhikeev, Zholaev, candidate of philological science, associate professor N.D. Nomikhanov (executive of Higher council of Kalmak ASSR ), senior teachers A. Kainarbaeva, A.D. Dauletova and etc. has their own places in the history of the chair.

Teachers of the chair combine teaching with science, they do researches on the issues of Kazakh language history and language theory. Introduction of such courses as Kazakh literary language, lexis, morphology, and dialectology was the result of new researches.

Professor Balakaev's work " The main types of set expressions in Kazakh language" (1957) based the investigation of the syntax set expressions and was greatly valued by famous researchers of Turkic studies. Introduction of this book helped to form "Balakaev's school". Investigation of the Kazakh language culture from scientific point of view starts from this issued book: "The problems of the Kazakh language culture" (1968).

In the result of widely investigated grammatical and syntax structure of Kazakh language the following monographic works were issued: M. Balakaev's "The main types of word combinations of modern Kazakh language" (1975), O. Tolegenov's "Types of sentences of modern Kazakh language"(1968), M. Tomanov's " Historical grammar of kazakh language"(1978,1987), T. Sairambaev's "Complex word combinations of modern Kazakh language" (1981). On the basis of these works special courses on different problems of linguistics were lectured. The first works: "Morphological structure of a word" (Y. E. Mamanov)," Structural types of simple sentences" ( O.S Tolegenov), "Types of word combinations" (T.Sairambaev), "Poetics of literary language" (H.Karimov), " The language of ancient monuments" (M.Tomanov), "Kazakh language culture" (M. Sergaliev), etc.

Modern Kazakh linguistics assisted to introduction of new courses as basic teaching subjects. For example, "Kazakh dialectology" (H.K. Muhambet, 1961), "Historical grammar" (M.T. Tomanov, 1963), "The history of Kazakh literary language" (H.K. Muhambet, 1966), " Practical stylistics" (O.S. Tolegenov, 1963, later B. Manasbaev 1966). Associate professor Y.E. Mamanov wrote two monographs ( "Auxiliary verbs of modern Kazakh language", 1949 and "Modern Kazakh language. Verb, 1966), in 50-60s the chair of Kazakh philology wrote 5 textbooks for university students and syllabus for pedagogical colleges. In general 40 works were published. O.S. Tolegenov published more than 30 works.

Professor M. Balakaev was the first head of the joint chairs of Kazakh language and Kazakh literature. He ran the chair of Kazakh language for about 30 years (1952-1975).

Professor M.Balakaev devoted his works to the phonetics, lexicology, lexicography, terminology, the history of the language, translation, the problems of alphabet, morphology, syntax, stylistics, language culture, methods of teaching of Kazakh language. The number of his famous works is 15and joint works is 10. He was scientific adviser of 42 candidates of science and doctors.

Some graduators of the chair (R.S. Amirov, K.A.Akhanov, B.Bolganbaev, S.M. Isaev, A.T. Kaidarov, A.K. Kurishzhanov, K.M. Musaev, Sh.Sh. Sarybaev, M.T. Tomanov, K. Esenov, G.A. Meiramov, T. Aidarov, N.H. Demesinova, H.M. Nurmukhanov, F.Sh. Orasbaeva, B. Hasanov, K.Sh. Kusainov, M. S. Sergaliev, O. Aitbaev, S. Omarbekov, S. Kaliev, Zh. Saduakasov, A. Zhunisbekov, E. Zhanpeisov, O. Nakysbekov, S. Myrzabekov, B. Sagyndykuly, B. Shalabaev, G. Smagulova, A. Aldasheva, B.K. Momynova, A. Salkynbai, D. A. Alkebaeva, L. S. The Chair of Kazakh philology of al Farabi Kazakh National University takes the first place throughout republic in writing educational aids and textbooks for universities.

The chair of Kazakh philology became research and methodological center of the Republic Kazakhstan. Teachers and young scientists from China, Turkish, Karakalpakstan, Chuvash republic, Bulgaria constantly exchange experiences with our chair staff.

Abisheva (1984-1990), doctor of philological science, associate professor E. Abdrasilov(2002-2008) worked at this chair.

Teachers and researchers of the chair of Kazakh Philology have been using all achievements to investigate deep prehistory of Kazakh language.

The chair of Kazakh philology makes great contribution into development of advanced traditions of Kazakh language which started at the beginning of XXI century.

The members of the chair take active part in social faculty and university life.

One of the main objectives of the chair is to form general theoretical courses according to the requirements of the process of teaching at university and renewing of its content with the help of the world achievements.

There is a Council at al Farabi Kazakh National University where candidate dissertation on specialties "Kazakh language" and "Russian language" are defended and it has existed since 1977. Later when Kazakh language gained state status in 1997 it was reopened again as the Council where candidate and doctor dissertations on Kazakh and Turkic languages specialties are defended. By training scientific candidates the chair of Kazakh philology has improved scientific conditions of Kazakhstan universities. Young scientists who were directed by the chair teachers successfully work in different parts of the republic.

According to many profiled teaching article of Kazakhstan Republic law (since 02.09.1994) state standards on training of post graduators was introduced to the University training system. On the basis of this law the main aim of the Kazakh philology chair in training post graduators is: to improve skills of using fundamental knowledge and science.

History of Kazakh language: language of writing monuments of middle ages, history of writing, semantic structure of complex verbs, one syllable roots, motivation of words of old Turkic words, etymology of words, history of formation, periods, lexical semantic and grammar description of Kazakh literary language and etc.

Methods of teaching Kazakh language: types and kinds of the lessons, methods of teaching Kazakh language in Russian audience, visual aids at Kazakh language lessons, method of teaching Kazakh spelling and etc.

Language of mass media: language of advertisements, mass media terminology problems, standards and style of sociopolitical journalism, linguistic aspects of new translations of Kazakh language.

Scientific direction of the chair is to research the Kazakh language in synchronic and diachronic ways. It trains post graduators on specialties 10.02.02 -Kazakh language, 10.02.06 Turkic languages.

There is a dissertation council D 14 A 01.23 on specialty 10.02.02 The Kazakh language.

For the last 50 years the chair has been working by two main directions: 1. Modern Kazakh language. 2. The problems of historical grammar of Kazakh language.

The chair of Kazakh philology deals with the main problems of linguistics such as history of Kazakh language, problems of Kazakh literary language, phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology, morphology, word formation, semantics of modern Kazakh language, language culture and stylistics.

Information about historical written monuments of early and middle ages , phonological rules of Turkic language vocabulary, etymology and historical word formation, grammatical structure of Kazakh language have been investigated structurally. Kazakh phraseology and newspaper lexis have also been researched synchronically and diachronically.
