History of university from 1940 to 1947

From 1940 - 1947 the stage of formation of the Kazakh State University was during the thunderous war-time and post-war reconstruction of the economy and social infrastructure of the country.

The war has left its imprint on the activities of the Kazakh State University. It was necessary to ship to shortened program and actively prepare specialists for the front - nurses, doctors, radio operators, radiologists, translators, professionals of chemical services and others.

287 teachers and students went to the front from the university, most of whom did not return. The number of pupils and staff of the University have been rewarded for courage and bravery with orders and medals, and an alumnus A.G. Popov is awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In the early years of the war a university had very hard times. An evacuees institutions, organizations, universities, scientific research institutes arrived in Alma-Ata. In the university there was not enough classrooms, equipment, the Ukrainian Institute of Astronomy and Physics, Ukrainian Physics and Technology Institute, spectrographic laboratory of MAI, protein laboratory of Academy of Sciences of the USSR and other organizations were placed in its buildings.

But this process had also a positive side. Due to the inflow of skilled scientific forces from Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad and other cities and research centers, academic teaching and research staff of KazSU was strengthened. During these years, great scientists as academicians such as I.I. Meshchaninov, N.S. Akulov, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR V.A. Dogel, A.V. Dumanskiy, professor A. Mikhlin, M.A. Rozenbsrg, N. Pakul and others began to work in the university.

Thereby, a favorable conditions were created for improving the quality of student learning, and for the deployment of new areas of research, the formation of scientific schools of the united and then the world level. The research front was expanded, particularly, at the Department of Chemistry a scientific school of military chemistry was formed, which became an advising center of many technical agencies and military units. The same years were the starting point of forming of Kazakhstani scientific schools in the fields of astronomy, physics, history, linguistics and other fields of research.

An overwhelming majority of professors and teachers participated in the research paper, which increased the overall level of research and its role in the life of staff and preparation of students community. One can say that especially during the war the foundation for the subsequent formation of the Kazakh State University was laid, which in today's global terminology refers to "research university" - of the highest category of universities, specialists training that is closely connected with the most advanced research and development. As a result, the socio-political status of KazSU was raised, which was attributed to the first category of high schools in 1943/1944 academic years. Meanwhile, 44 professors were working in the university - doctors of sciences and 22 candidates of sciences.

Post-war reconstruction and further economic construction of the country ensured the strengthening of material-technical and intellectual base of the university. The number of departments and postgraduate program enrollment growth was high, ties with the central universities and research institutes were strengthening, new buildings were constructing, biological station and biological museum were organized. KazSU confidently took place of leading center in solving the major problem of skilled personnel training for all sectors of the economy and the socio-political life of the republic. With the end of the war, the number of students increased. So, in 1946 an estimated number of university students was 977, at 5 university departments and 27 divisions specialists in 14 specialties were trained.
