December 14, 2023. At the Far East Department, a seminar was held with the participation of students of the 3rd year of the Department of Japanese Studies on the topic:  SDGs 2: Eliminating hunger, ensuring food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable development of agriculture.

In 2015, the world community approved 17 global Sustainable Development Goals to improve people's lives by 2030. Goal 2 - "Zero hunger" - contains a promise to end hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition and contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture. This goal is a priority for the UN World Food Program.

According to a joint report of five UN agencies, the number of hungry people in the world was about 735 million in 2022, which is 3.8 million fewer than the previous year. However, there is “no reason to be complacent,” UN experts warned, pointing out that the problem of hunger in Africa, Western Asia and the Caribbean continues to worsen. 2.4 billion people, or 29.6% of the planet’s population, did not have stable access to food in 2022, experts estimate. According to them, if this trend continues, the goal of eradicating hunger on the planet by 2030 will be unattainable. The reason for the negative development at the UN is considered to be the coronavirus pandemic, periodic natural disasters, as well as armed conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine

The World Food Program (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger around the world. WFP's mission is to eradicate world hunger.

Food and agriculture organization of the United Nations - FAO (Food and agriculture organization, or FAO). FAO works to reduce global poverty and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improving nutrition and ensuring food security by ensuring access to food for all. With more than 194 member countries, FAO operates in more than 130 countries around the world.

On September 23, 2021, one of the largest events of our time dedicated to the prospects for food supply for the world’s population took place in New York - the “Food Summit 2021”,  organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN.

On September 18, 2023, at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) summit in New York, world leaders adopted a political declaration emphasizing their commitment to building a stable, inclusive and prosperous world by 2030. The head of the UN listed six main tasks facing the international community at this stage, while identifying the fight against hunger as paramount.

Also at the seminar, issues related to the position of Japan and Kazakhstan in the Global Ranking for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals were discussed.
