The Far East Department held an event on the theme “SDG 13: Combating climate change”

         On December 4 and December 11, 2023, seminars were held by teachers of the division of Japanese and Korean studies; 4th-year undergraduate students from the Korean division and 1st-year master course students from the Japanese division took part in it. The theme of the seminar: “SDG 13: Combating climate change.” Also, this event is timed to coincide with the working trip of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to the World Climate Summit (COP 28).

         In 1992, the UN organized the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, at which the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted, and the institution coordinating its implementation, the UN Climate Secretariat, was created. The Conference of the Parties is the highest negotiating body for the implementation of the provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol (KP) and the Paris Agreement (PA).

         This year it started in Dubai (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, 2023. This year's event is organized by the United Arab Emirates. More than 70 thousand participants are expected to participate in COP28 - representatives of states and governments of 197 countries, scientists, as well as civil activists.

         President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited the Dubai Expo City exhibition center to participate in the opening ceremony of the World Climate Summit. During the summit, Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke at a plenary session and also held a number of meetings with heads of state and heads of business structures.

         More than 100 representatives of Kazakh companies, major investors and international organizations are taking part in the COP28 conference.

         The united pavilion of Central Asian countries “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice”, organized by the governments of Central Asian countries together with international partners and the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia, will act as a single dialogue platform. The Central Asian countries made a joint Regional Statement at the COP28 Conference, in which they spoke about the main measures as part of the overall strategy for adaptation to climate change.

At the seminar, the content of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s speech at the World Climate Summit was explained to students through a digest of world and Kazakh media.
