In 2018, the Department of Korean Studies of the Department of the Far East accepted an unprecedented number of first years students. Adviser - curator, as well as a doctoral student in the specialty "Oriental Studies" Sermukhametova Bagzhan told about the main priorities of the modern day through the prism of history.
From 17 – 18 January 2019, the Republic of Korea held an international scientific conference under the auspices of the " New Understanding and Utilization of Local Culture Resources "at the Andong state University in Andong. 12 reports were presented at the conference, including speakers from Japan, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.
The Department of the Far East once again accepts the professorial staff of the Tokyo University of Foreign Languages. Professor OKADA Akito within the program of visiting professors visited KazNU and read a course of lectures on the education system in Japan. Professor OKADO Akito defended his master's thesis at the University of New York (USA), a doctoral thesis at the University of Oxford (Great Britain), and authored a number of scientific papers published in rating publications of SCOPUS.
Not less interesting event was a two-hour lecture at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies which is a partner University of Al-Farabi KazNU. More than 50 students attended a lecture on the theme “Ethnic solidarity of Kazakhstani Koreans as a mechanism of upward mobility”, and also learned about the possibilities given by new Master’s and Doctoral educational programs at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The Faculty of Oriental Studies hosted an international conference about Korean literature called “Study of Korean literature abroad: problems, trends and prospects”. It is part of a three-year project, to discuss about researches done by non-native on Korean studies , funded by the Academy of Korean Studies of the Republic of Korea.
The annual “Day of Japanese Culture” was held at the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty 3 November. The Embassy of Japan held the event in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kazakhstan - Japanese Human Resource Development Center, Narhoz University, the Association of Japanese Businessmen in Kazakhstan, the Japanese Association in Kazakhstan, the organization of Terracaya and the Kazakhstan-Japan Silk Road Association.
The 2nd year student of KazNU was accepted as employee of the Korean Republic newspaper «Koryeo Ilbo".
On December 10, 2018 in the rector's office at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was held ceremony of awarding scholarships JSC "Shinhan Bank Kazakhstan" in Almaty. Seven students who had a high GPA, as well as low-income families of Department of the Far East of the Oriental Studies Faculty of KazNU received scholarships in the amount of 110 000 tenge (770 000 tenge). The scholarships were awarded by Jaksykeldinov Nariman Maksutovich, Managing Director of JSC “Shinhan Bank Kazakhstan”.
