Technical training on risk mapping

On February 24-25, 2020, training on mapping the risks and hazards of flash floods was held in Almaty. In Central Asia, such floods can occur due to intense melting of snow. In addition, floods associated with the outburst of glacial moraine lakes (GLOF) also pose a threat to people living in mountainous and foothill regions.

With the support of #GFDRR, the training was organized for the second time for participants from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as teachers of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology were invited to learn methods for developing high-quality and comprehensive risk maps.

In a two-day workshop, invited lecturers Dr. Abror Gafurov (Germany) and Dr. Markus Zimmermann (Switzerland) provided an overview of different approaches to hazard and risk assessment modelling using GIS technologies.
