Sustainable Development Goals : What can I do?

The 1st year students of the faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology recently have had an event called “Sustainable Development Goals : What can I do?” It was devoted to 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations to tackle the world’s biggest problems by 2030.

All students of the group actively participated in this event because they understand that it is in their interest to know about these goals. The issue of sustainability is one that concerns everybody: everyone needs a better place to live, some people want better homes and housing, while other people want better schools, more jobs, better shops, cleaner and safer streets. Others may want all these things. To solve the world’s problems, the next generation needs to know what those problems are. More than 40% of the global population are between the ages of ten and 24- the largest youth population ever.

The coordinators of the event were Suleymenova Ainagul and Nurlanov Albert. They began their opening  speech with a rhetorical question “Why should we know the UN’s development goals?” and gave an answer: the 17 Sustainable Development goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Hundreds of millions of people do not have enough food to eat; women still earn less than men and have fewer rights; plant and animal species are rapidly vanishing; and the gap between rich and poor is indeed getting wider.

All students of the group actively participated in this event because they understand that it is in their interest to know about these goals. Muratbekova Aiya and Ersyn Adiya spoke about goal № 16 ( Peace, Justice, Strong Institutions), Iniyativa Gulfairuz and Dautova Venera acquainted classmates with the goal № 3 (Good health and Well Being), Suleimeniva Ainagul gave a talk about goal№ 4 (Quality Education), MukhametzhanAkniyet and Abu Moldir spoke about goal № 13 (Climate Action), Imamusenova Asal and Abdysattar Gulfarizada –goal № 1(No Poverty) and Kurmashev Rahat and Kan Nastya –goal № 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). All the speakers noted that all the goals are highly ambitious. No country, organization, institution, government or business can achieve them alone. Every country, people , community and every citizen should be involved in tackling these goals and making the positive changes for people and planet.

The students of the group 101 of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology call on all the student community of al-Farabi University to be involved in making these goals a reality!
