At the Faculty of 5 departments, the main directions of research:

• study physiographic and anthropogenic and technogenic factors forming the environment in Kazakhstan;

• patterns of development of ecological and geomorphological processes on the territory of Kazakhstan and their mapping;

• mapping of adverse ecological and geomorphological processes intermontane basins Southeast Kazakhstan;

• hydrology of mountain areas of Kazakhstan, hydrological problems of landlocked basins, transboundary hydroecological problems and the Republic of Kazakhstan (resource assessment and prediction of natural waters of Kazakhstan under anthropogenic and climate-driven changes );

• study of the regularities of formation and dynamics of activity dangerous meteorological phenomena and processes in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

• study of the theoretical and practical problems of the territorial organization of the Republic of Kazakhstan tourism;

• development of scientific basis to ensure energy and ecological security of Kazakhstan, the study of the experience of leading universities and businesses in the area;

• development of the methodological foundations of GIS spatial analysis to create adaptive-landscape system of agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Also, is actively involved in search and the introduction of new innovative breakthrough research in the field of geography, nature, geoscience, recreational geography and tourism, which aims to commercialize RW to attract investors, both in the domestic market and foreign, which will contribute to the specialized programs for industrial development sectors. Currently, work is underway on four innovative ways:

1. GIS mapping geosystems for management decisions;

2. Ecopark Treasury - new to tourism map of Almaty;

3. Green Bridge through generations;

4. UNESCO regional hub for sustainable development in Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
