Scientific Research Institute for Issues in Biology and Biotechnology

Scientific Research Institute Of Biology And Biotechnology Problems

The institute was established in 1993 on the basis of biology faculty to increase the efficiency of conducted scientific researches and to stimulate high-quality science personnel training for industry. In 2003, according to the decree issued by Government, the institute was transformed to the affiliated state enterprise of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University “Scientific Research Institute of Biology And Biotechnology Problems”.

Doctor of science, professor Tuleukhanov Sultan Tuleukhanovich, the first director of the institute, led it from 1993 through 2000. Since 2000 till present the position of candidate of science, associate professor Bissenbaev Amangeldy Kuanbayevich, holds director.

Scientific Activity

The main goal of the institute is to design, organize, and support research studies, train qualified science personnel, elaborate and introduce research results into corresponding branches of industry and educational processes of biology faculty.

At present time institute of biology and biotechnology problems works in the following primary domains.

Fundamental researches:

  • Hormonal regulation of plant and animal target cells.
  • Structural and functional organization and expression of pro- and eukaryotic genomes.
  • Control mechanisms of ontogenetically programmed cell death in cereal seed cells.
  • The genome analysis of corn lines with various types of cytoplasmic male sterility.
  • Temporal organization of biosystems under normal and stress conditions.
  • Morphological evolution pathways, systematic and phylogeny of some groups of vertebrate and invertebrate animals.
  • The mechanisms of cell resistance and organic adaptogenesis of animal respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems.
  • The study of bioflora of Kazakhstan.

Applied areas:

  • The processing of organic wastes for alternative fuel (bioethanol, biogas, etc.).
  • The development of biotechnological preparations for environmental defense.
  • The development of production technology for ecologically clean foodstuff and biotechnological preparations for farming and medicine (forage proteins, probiotics, food additives, vermiculture, vaccines, etc.).
  • The sustenance and extension of collection, cultivation of microorganisms and yeast for industrial purposes.
  • The creation of new agricultural crop breeds resistant to negative biotic and abiotic factors of environment.
  • Bioinformatics. The elucidation of genetical causes and diagnostics of various diseases.

From the day of its foundation, the institute serves as an important training centre of biology faculty, sustaining close relationship with all faculty departments.

The master, bachelor and PhD diploma works are tightly related to scientific researches conducted in institute laboratories and are carried out on their basis.

The institute fulfils more than 30 topics of fundamental and applied research programs of NAN RK, National Centre of Agrarian Studies, National Biotechnology Centre, international grants (INTAS, Inco-Copernicus, USAID).

As a result of scientific investigations over 35 author certificates, 25 patents and 20 prepatents of Republic of Kazakhstan and Russian Federation are obtained, 7 monographs, more than 3000 papers and theses are published, 5 compilation books are issued.

The Institute maintains broad international relations. Staff scientists collaborate with their colleagues in Europe, USA, Russia and China.
