The training course forms a theoretical and methodological basis for summarizing information on the physical chemistry of clay minerals and the technology for processing natural sorbents. During the study of course, students should be competent in: - to summarize information on the physical chemistry and structure of natural minerals; - to develop technologies for processing and modification of natural sorbents; - to use different adsorption models to describe the sorption properties of clay sorbents; - to regulate the surface properties of natural sorbents using surfactants and polymers of various structures; - to offer various types of sorbents for solving specific technological problems. During the study of the discipline PhD students will learn following aspects: the range and classification of natural sorbents; physical and chemical properties of organic and inorganic sorbents; structure, composition, sorption and ion-exchange properties of clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite, bentonite, vermiculite, etc.), new technologies.

Ecological Aspects of Uranium Industry in the RK

- Description: The purpose of the discipline is to form the ability to assess the environmental impact of the uranium industry; to predict the most optimal conditions for solving environmental problems arising from the extraction of uranium and to calculate radiation doses to the local population. During the study of course, PhD students should be competent in: - categorize the most important risks in the extraction of uranium from ores; - explain the provisions of legal documents related to the environmental aspects of the uranium industry of Kazakhstan; - carry out calculations of radiation doses of the population; - assess the environmental impact of the uranium industry; - develop measures to reduce environmental risks in uranium mining from ores. During the study of the discipline PhD students will learn following aspects: the main existing environmental problems of the uranium industry in Kazakhstan, the legacy of the uranium industry on the example of the countries of Central Asia and Kazakhstan, the dose of the population and recommendations to address the environmental problems of the uranium industry.

- Description: The purpose of the discipline is to form the ability to develop cost-effective environmental monitoring programmes to collect reliable information on the level and trends of environmental pollution by toxic substances. During the study of course, PhD students should be competent in: - find and select the most appropriate methods of selection, preparation and analysis of samples of environmental objects; - experimentally and theoretically to optimize the methodology for environmental analysis; - develop cost-effective environmental monitoring programmes to collect reliable information on the level and trends of environmental pollution by toxic substances; - organize programs of automatic and continuous environmental monitoring; - process and describe the data obtained in the course of environmental monitoring. During the study of the discipline PhD students will learn following aspects: methods of field tests; modern instrumental methods and software packages used in environmental monitoring; selection and optimization of methods of chemical, physical and biochemical analysis of environmental objects; integration and automation of analysis and data processing; use of environmental monitoring to solve various problems. Special attention will be paid to the study of the latest scientific articles and developments that can be used to improve the environmental monitoring system in Kazakhstan
