International law branch

The branch of international law of the Faculty of International Relations of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University is the leading centre of education of the lawyers specialised in international law in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the countries of Central Asia. The branch works on the basis of the chair of international law created in 1990 within the KazSU Faculty of Law. Since 1995 the chair functions as a part of the Faculty of International Relations, being base chair for a separate speciality of "International Law".

Preparation of experts is conducted under the three-stage program of continuous education including a bachelor degree, a magistracy and Ph. D doctoral studies.

Education on a bachelor degree lasts 4 years, for this time the student trains on disciplines of common university component (economic theory, History of Kazakhstan, philosophy, sociology, political science, computer science, etc.), common jurisprudence disciplines (theory of state and law, constitutional, administrative, criminal, civil law etc.) and basic disciplines of international law (public international law, private international law, diplomatic and consular law, law of international organisations, law of armed conflicts, international law of human rights, etc.). The special attention is given to branches of international and internal law regulating relations with participation of the Kazakhstan and foreign persons and companies, customs and others state bodies in extraeconomics sphere. Within the limits of a bachelor degree students should study one foreign language on own choice – western (English, French, German or Spanish) or eastern (Arabian, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Korean), and also base studying of the second language during 1 semester is provided. On a course of training students pass educational and working internship. Graduates receive degree of the Bachelor of International Law with knowledge of a foreign language.

Graduates of a bachelor degree can get the higher scientific and pedagogical education, having continued it on a two-year course of magistracy where under the guidance of leading professors, disciplines of public and private law international are profoundly studied. After end graduates will be awarded degree of the Master of International Law.

Since 2005 the program of Ph. D. doctoral studies is started on international law branch, its graduates earn degree of the Philosophy Doctor in International Law. Students of doctoral level have possibility to make foreign scientific business trips; one of heads of the thesis for a doctor's degree appoints the invited foreign professor (from Russia, France, the Great Britain, etc.).

On letting out chair of a speciality of employment highly skilled experts, among which 1 professor, the corresponding member of National Academy of sciences RK and 8 senior lecturers conduct, candidates of sciences. The majority of teachers have passed training abroad. Teachers of chair develop special courses, the manuals recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science for application in all high schools of republic.

Students of a speciality "International law" have ample opportunities for realisation of the potential in the field of a science, public work, creativity. So, students can take part at faculty, university, interuniversity and international scientific conferences, the Olympic Games, debate and competitions. Among them it is necessary to note especially Jessup Competition on the international public law, Martens competition on law of armed conflicts where students of branch of international law Treasury have traditionally high indicators.

Feature of a speciality "International law" is that its graduates, possessing knowledge both on общеюридическим to disciplines, and on various branches of international law, and also in perfection owning a foreign language, have rather wide spectrum of employment. In other words, they are both lawyers, and diplomats in one person. Graduates of a speciality work basically, in following directions:

- Public service in bodies of external relations (the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, embassies, consulates), judicial, law-enforcement system, Office of Public Prosecutor, customs, justice, a number of the ministries and departments, in particular in their international departments;

- Legal practice as in legal departments of the foreign, joint and Kazakhstan enterprises in extracting, bank, financial, etc. spheres, and in the specialised legal companies, and also private practice in the field of legal profession, a notariate, customs registration;

- Work in the various international intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations (the United Nations, OSCE, the Interpol, etc.).

Having arrived on branch of international law of faculty of the international relations Treasury, the student will get to Wednesday of the most active, talented and perspective students who are engaged, except study and a science debate, sports, KVN, various creative activity. The years spent on the given speciality, except the received knowledge and acquaintance to new friends, will be remembered by the most interesting and various student's life.
