All significant events of the university are held within the walls of this unique library. During the current repair works, wooden covers were installed on heating batteries in conference rooms.

The furniture has been replaced, and additional lighting has been installed. 800 chairs in the Classical Reading Room on the first floor and the Abay Room on the second floor were reupholstered: the upholstery on the chairs was replaced with light tapestry. The Scientific Library of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was founded at the same time as the university in 1934.

In 2012 the library moved to a new modern five-story building with the total area of 17,856.6 m2, equipped with new technologies and communication solutions which are in harmony with the elements of Eastern style. The unified information and library fund now consists of more than two million copies in Kazakh, Russian, English and other languages.
