Department of General Linguistics and European Languages, Faculty of Philology, KazNU named after al-Farabi was renamed and now bears the name "Department of Turkic Studies and Theory of Language".

The decision to open the Department of Turkic Studies and Theory of Language was made at the Academic Council of the University.

The department with almost a century of history and unique traditions, carries out training in modern and popular educational programs of the specialty "Linguistics" of the master's and doctoral studies, "Linguistics and intercultural communication", "Computer linguistics" of the magistracy, as well as high-quality three-level training of specialists with knowledge of two foreign languages ​​( Western and Eastern languages) in the specialty "Foreign language: two foreign languages". Rich experience in teaching and conducting scientific research in the field of language theory, comparative and contrastive linguistics allowed us to reach a new level, now the updated department will train highly qualified specialists in Turkic studies, the object of study of which will be the history, culture, ethnography of more than 40 modern Turkic languages ​​that are widespread today. in the world, which are based on the study of ancient Turkic monuments.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has all the prerequisites to become an intellectual center that opens up great opportunities for fundamental scientific research in the field of Turkic studies in Kazakhstan and Asia. The assignment of professional qualifications to the specialty "Turkology" and training in this educational program is entrusted to the Faculty of Philology, in particular, this department is no coincidence. As you know, well-known specialists in the field of theory and practice of Turkology carried out their scientific and pedagogical activities at the Faculty of Philology. During the Great Patriotic War, at the Faculty of Philology, lectures on various areas of Turkology were given by such world-renowned scientists-professors as Sergei Malov, Igor Meshchaninov.

A whole scientific school was formed at the faculty, at the origins of which were the well-known scientists-Turkologists Abduali Kaidar, Markhabat Tomanov, Gubaidulla Aydarov, Abzhan Kuryshzhanov, Arsen Ibatov, Altai Amanzholov, Berikbai Sagyndykov and others. Scientific monographs developed and published in different years in Kazakhstan. , textbooks, curricula on Turkic studies are directly related to the names of these scientists.

Today, their followers and students are specialists-researchers, known at the republican and international level, professionally dealing with issues of Turkic studies in leading domestic and world universities and research institutes. The formed and renewed team of Turkic scholars together with leading specialists in the field of language theory will give impetus to scientific research of a high professional level, and the training of future Turkic specialists will open up new opportunities for large-scale scientific research.
