In the discipline Botany: introducing students to biotopes in which various plants grow. Mastery of field research methods, i.e. visual observation, study of methods for collecting and storing herbariums (labeling, storage, ability to clearly determine belonging to families, genus, species), and daily filling out a diary of educational field practice.

On October 16, 2023, Senior lecturer Tormanova A.N. held a presentation of the project of the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience on the topic "Antistress-Relax" on the importance of including physical activity on a regular basis.

Stress nowadays affects all spheres of our life and first of all the health of students and teachers. How to cope and recover from stressful loads?

It is proposed to perform a set of physical exercises from yoga and special breathing practices to relax and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which gives the opportunity to relieve tension in the body and "turn on" the system of rest and reboot after a stressful day.

October 11, 2023 in the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, students majoring in "Biotechnology" at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University took on the responsibility of addressing the global issue of hunger. As part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these students developed unique recipes for nutritious dairy products within the discipline of "Industrial Biotechnology." This project became possible due to the joint efforts of the students and lecturer of the Biotechnology Department, A.S. Kistaubayeva.

With these talented students, tackling the problem of hunger became a heartfelt endeavor. Their creative approach and diligence led to the creation of dairy products enriched with essential nutrients. The innovative methods proposed by the students not only make the products delicious but also ensure a high content of protein, vitamins, and minerals necessary for health.

"This project is not just a scientific study but also our contribution to the common good," said one of the students. "We are confident that the nutritious products we have created can help those facing food shortages, providing them not only with satisfaction from taste but also with essential nutrients.

The Biotechnology Department and the students express their gratitude to the university for its support and the opportunity to bring their ideas to life. These creative dairy product recipes mark a significant step forward in the fight against hunger and continue to emphasize the importance of education and science in creating a sustainable future for everyone.

Today, Associate Professor of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Ph.D. Yrgynbaeva Shynar Mukhametzhanovna gave an open lecture on the topic “Eliminating hunger, achieving food security and developing sustainable agriculture.” The listeners were 3rd year students majoring in Genetics. The purpose of this lecture was to discuss methods and strategies that increase agricultural productivity and profitability, as well as the conditions necessary to achieve food security.

On October 7, a round table on the topic “Health is wealth” was held. During the event, students were told about the ways and principles of a proper lifestyle, and students shared their thoughts and opinions on the topic of health.

Lecturer Lukyanchikovа E.N. visited the Faculty of biology and biotechnology with a lecture on the prevention of Acute Respiratory Viral Infections and tuberculosis. 1-4 year undergraduate students attended the lecture. Students extended their knowledge regarding cold diseases (the prerequisites for the emergence and methods of prevention of acute respiratory viral infections, acute respiratory infections and influenza), on the basis of tuberculosis prevention among the population – measures aiming to increase the body's defense forces: rational and timely nutrition, drop smoking and overdrinking of alcoholic drinks, compliance with the proper work regime, tempering, maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology was visited by pedagogician-psychologist Amangeldy Meirambekovich Tastan with a lecture on "High–quality education and a fair profession” topic for undergraduate and graduate students of the faculty.

Al-Farabi KazNU as part of the implementation of the UN SDG goal #13 (Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) serving as a connecting university in the NATO-funded project NATO MYP G6094 titled "Mitigation of climate change through advanced phytotechnologies for military lands (MilClimATech)" for 2023-2026 years.

An online meeting was held with the participation of the main executor of the project, Professor of the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem Dr. Valentina Pidlisnyuk, as well as Dr. Andrey Hertz from the V. Hnatyuk Ternopil National Pedagogical University (TNPU) in Ukraine.

The meeting between Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi KazNU Kurmanbaeva M.S. and Professor of Shaanxi University of Technology and Science (Xi'an, China) Jian Zha took place from September 25 to September 28, 2023. During the meeting, they discussed prospective project collaborations between Shaanxi University of Technology and Science and the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at Al-Farabi KazNU and identified opportunities for master's and doctoral students to participate in scientific internships. In addition, Professor Jian Zha presented a lecture entitled "Metabolic engineering of E.coli for the production of anthocyanin" and shared his microbiology and molecular biology expertise.

Third-year bachelor students of the specialty "Genetics" and their adviser Aizhan Izbasarovna Zhusupova, attended the master class "Spectrum of Oncomine panels for NGS in diagnostics and personalized therapy in oncology", conducted by TreeGene together with the official representative of the largest manufacturer of laboratory equipment and reagents ThermoFisher Scientific - Zalma Ltd.

During the master class, they learned about the advantages of Oncomine Dx Target Test technology: only 10 ng of DNA is required for analysis, which greatly simplifies the procedure for sequencing a patient’s genome.

This event was initiated by the students themselves, who are currently studying the discipline “Molecular Diagnostics” and want to see the practical application of the described methods. And Aizhan Izbasarovna gladly supported their initiative.
