«The scientific research institute of ecological problems» (SRIEP) has been organized in 1993 and it is the affiliated state enterprise on the right of economic conducting the Republican state enterprise «Al-Farabi Kazakh National University».

First director of institute there was a visible kazakhstan scientist genetist and the ecologist doctor biological science, professor A.B. Bigaliev, supervised institute from 1993 to 2000. The Institute has received a modern orientation of researches owing to scientifically-organizational activity of doctor biological science, professor T.M.Shalakhmetova, supervised institute from 2000 to 2008. Now the head of institute is candidate biological science A.M.Kalimagambetov.

1994-1997 - program performance of the Science Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science of Republic Kazakhstan (SF MES RK) «Development of scientific bases of Kazakhstan territories restoration ecosystems on the ecologically pure saving-resources technologies basis and a substantiation of rational wildlife management principles».

1997-1999 - performance of program SF MES RK «Development of forecasting principles and an quality estimation of an anthropogenous the disrupted territories of Kazakhstan environment ».

2000 - it is lead the International cientifically-Practical conference « the Reality and prospects of steady development Aral region ecosysems ». The representation INTAS in Kazakhstan was renderd the sponsor's help at the edition of materials.

2001 - together SRIEP with Institute of nuclear physics National Nuclear Center (NNC) RК has taken part in the organization and work of the international seminar « Nuclear methods and technologies for the industry, medicine and an agriculture ».

2004 - it is lead the International Scientifically-Practical Conference «Prospects of ecosystems steady development Near-Caspian region». «KazTranGas» has rendered the sponsor's help in carrying out of conference.

2000-2006 - employees of institute have executed 5 projects included in Republican scientific-technical programs.

2006-2008 - SRI of ecological problems is head organization under the subprogram 4.4.1 "Studying of xenobiotic influence on the living of microorganisms, plants and animals for development of new methods of bioindication and bioremediation of disrupted ecosystems», including in the program of basic researches MES RK «Biological bases of creation of high technologies for public health services, an agriculture and preservations of the environment».

The basic purposes and problems

The purpose of activity SRIEP is planning, the organization and maintenance of scientific researches in the field of ecology and environmental preservations, preparation of the highly skilled scientific staff, development and introduction of research results in corresponding branches of manufacture and educational process of the biological, chemical and geographical faculties, directed on rise and stabilization of economy of Republic Kazakhstan.

SRIEP carries out following problems for achievement of specified purpose:

• carrying out fundamental and applied researches in the field of ecology and the environmental preservation;
• creation of new technics, ecologically pure technologies and materials;
• participation in designing and development of scientific-technical programs and projects, plans of scientific-research and developmental works;
• assistance in preparation of the highly skilled scientific staff and experts;
• the organization of scientific-technical and technical and economic examination of carrying out of scientific researches in SRIEP , revealing of the completed applied researches for the further practical development of scientific production and maintenance of patent cleanliness of scientific development;
• Maintenance of actions on protection of copyrights, protection industrial and intellectual property of scientists and the rights Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on scientific production.

Organizational structure

The structure of SRIEP consist of:

Scientific-technical advice (STA) is a collegium, including a director and ta Scientific secretary of institute, chiefs scientific division. STA discusses actual problems of science development and an every day life of institute, reports of research works.

The structure of institute includes 10 laboratories:

• ecologies of microorganisms;
• ecolgical-genetic monitoring biocenosis;
• bioclearing of an environment;
• ecological biochemistry;
• ecotoxicology;
• problems of desertification and ecosystem monitoring;
• ecological technologies;
• biogeotechnologies of metals;
• plant ecologies;
• ecological biotechnology.

Scientific directions

The basic scientific directions of institute are:

1. Development of principles of management by biogeoresources in modern ecological conditions in Republic Kazakhstan, maintenance of ecological safety of the person;

2. Development of the theory and methods of studying of an environment;

3. Development of criteria of a ecological-economic estimation of a anthropological changed territories of Kazakhstan, ecological examination;

4. Development of scientific bases of steady development and restoration of anthtopological transgressed ecosystems.

5. Creation of scientific-legal, technical-economic and information base for scientific researches and development of statutory acts of rational wildlife management and ecosystems restoration.

6. Maintenance scientific-technical and a material resources for preparation and retraining of highly skilled experts-ecologists of a various structure.

SUBJECTS OF FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCHES

The SRIEP is head organization under the subprogram 4.4.1. "Studying of xenobiotic influence on the living of microorganisms, plants and animals for development of new methods of bioindication and bioremediation disrupted ecosystems» (2006-2008), including in the program of basic researches MES RK «Biological bases of creation of high technologies for public health services, an agriculture and preservations of the environment». The supervisor of studies of the subprogram - doctor of biological science, the professor, the dean of biological faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University T.M. Shalakhmetova.

The studying xenobiotic influence on the living of microorganisms, plants and animals for development of new methods of bioindication and bioremediation disrupted ecosystems, polluted by oil, mineral oil and heavy metals » (M. Auezov SKSU, heads - academician of NAS RК Bishimbaev V.K., doctor of biological science, professor Isaeva A.U.);

3. To develop scientific bases of biological indication of soils on pollution by heavy metals at various systems of fertilizer in agrocenosis of a south-east of Kazakhstan » (КazNAM, the head - academician of NAS RК Eleshev R.E.);

4. The studying cellular mechanisms of stability of plants to heavy metals (scientific research institute of biology and biotechnology of NAS RК, the head - doctor of biological science, professor. Sarsenbaev B.A.);

5. To study influence of high concentration of salts (chloride sodium) and heavy metals (zinc, cadmium) on growth and development of galophyte plants and to develop ways of increase of their accumulated ability (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - candidate of biological science Boguspaev K.K.);

11. The creation of new methodical approaches for indication of various pollutans in water ecosystems on the basis of micro-algae» (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - doctor of biological science, professor Zajadan B.K.);

The studying and use of hydrobionts and dipterans of northern part of Caspian sea as organisms-indicators of accumulation and transformation of metabolites pirens of oil (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - doctor of biological science, professor Bigaliev A.B.);

The studying a level somatic polyploiody , chromosomal anomalies and activity of enzymes monooxidase systems at background mammal as biomarkers of a condition of an environment (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - doctor of biological science, professor Shalahmetova T.M.).

Under the subprogram 4.1.2. "Genetic variability: mechanisms of realization in ontogenesis, the spontaneous and induced mutations, influence of regulation and a reparation on stability eukaryotes and procaryotes» in SRIEP 1 project « Induced mutagenesis at mammals and decrease in its risk by biologically active substances of a natural origin » (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - candidate of biological science, senior lecturer Kolumbaeva S.Zh., 2006-2008).

In SRIEP 4 applied researches are carried out.

2 projects are financed by the National Center of Biotechnology of RК:

- The creation of biotechnologies on manufacture of biostimulators and means of protection of plants from cyanobacteriae on the basis of methods of cellular engineering (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - candidate of biological science, senior lecturer Dzhokebaeva S.A., 2006-2008);

- The allocation of the most active bacteria strains and their application for extraction of gold and uranium (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - doctor of biological science, professor Kanaev A.T., 2006-2008).

2 projects are realized under the Program «The International cooperation in the field of a science» CS MES RK (Committeeof Science MES RK) :

- The reception of a preparation on the basis of bioorganic selenium from micro-algae for increase of resistency of an organism to adverse factors of an environment (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - candidate of biological science, senior lecturer Dzhokebaeva S.A., 2007-2009);

- The development of technology of biological clearing household and agricultural sewage with use of micro-algae (SRI of ecological problems, Al-Farabi Kazkh National University, the head - doctor of biological science, professor Zajadan B.K. 2007-2009).

The scientific magazine «The Bulletin KazNU. Ecological series» is published on the basis of institute.

Employes of institute accept active participation in work of many international and republican conferences, widely advertising results of the researches.

Scientific researches results of institute employees to work in practice into educational process actively; performance of final works, master dissertations are carried out on material base of institute laboratories. Many appliances, laboratory glass, chemical agent, office equipment are got with support of the international and republican scientific grants. Themes of final works and master dissertations are connected with carried out SRW (Scientific-Researches Works) closely, and students accept active participation in their realization. The part of money resources of institute is allocated for encouragement of the best student's works on results annual scientifically-practical conferences of young scientists and students of biological faculty. Separate graduates-ecologists are distributed in laboratory of institute, they enter in postgraduate study, they perform dissertational works, themes of this works are connected with spent ecological researches closely. Thus, scientific-research activity of institute is directed on optimization of educational process and preparation of highly skilled experts-ecologists.
