According to the study of the global rating «UI Green Metric Ranking of World Universities», Al-Farabi KazNU has strengthened its position in the top 200 most environmentally friendly Universities in the world. Compared to last year, Kazakhstan's University has risen 16 places in this prestigious and authoritative ranking 172 among 700 HEIs from 78 countries.

The rating shows a real picture of the development of «green» technologies and environmental policies in higher education institutions and evaluates them according to such criteria as infrastructure development, waste storage and processing, rational use of water and energy, use of environmentally friendly transport, educational and scientific activities in the field of ecology, green space on campus. It should be noted that KazNU is significantly ahead of other Kazakhstani Universities in this ranking.

KazNU, leading the Global Hub of the United Nations Academic Impact Program on Sustainable Development, in order to put the global idea of President N. Nazarbayev «Green Bridge» into practice, initiated the international partnership project «Green Bridge Through Generations» and the creation of a Consortium of Universities of the world to implement it. Training of specialists in sustainable development and «green economy» is carried out in close integration with the MDP «Global Classroom», opened jointly with Columbia University.

As part of the «KazNU-Green Campus» project, an environmentally sustainable and comfortable «green» environment is being created at the University. Thus, for instance, a Center for «Green Technologies» was opened, which is a «Mini-EXPO» for the implementation of innovative projects on «green energy» using various energy technologies: wind, solar, hydro and geothermal, biogas and hydrogen energy. Here, on the basis of modern technologies and high-tech engineering, practical training of specialists is conducted.

The Energy-Efficient Greenhouse for growing flower-decorative, vegetable and small-fruit crops with application to hydroponics also successfully works. Work is being completed on the improvement of the «Kerenkulak» riverbed with a system of treatment facilities. Water from the river will be used in the «Aquaponika» artificial ecosystem. This will be a unique resting place for students, the University campus guests and residents of Almaty, as well as a practical base for training students in the maintenance and breeding of decorative and valuable species of fish and plants.

Most recently, the winter garden was opened in KazNU, where more than 50 tropical and subtropical plants are gathered, there are fountains and small architectural forms, places for students to rest and work. Here, future biologists, geo-botanists and ecologists undergo scientific internships and trainings, and special eco-trainings and excursions are held for students and schoolchildren, and nature lovers can take part in the plant care.

KazNU, being the initiator of many international projects, conducts purposeful work on the introduction of green technologies, the use of advanced achievements of science and technology in improving the energy efficiency of the University.
