All about HIV/AIDS
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection, and not everyone who has HIV advances to this stage.
HIV is transmitted:
- through the blood: when using contaminated needles or syringes when injecting drugs, transfusion of infected blood or its components, transplantation of organs and tissues from an HIV-infected person.
- sexually, during unprotected sex.
- from mother to child: to child during birth from an HIV-infected mother and during breastfeeding.
HIV is not transmitted:
- the handshakes
- kissing
- via linen
- through the air by sneezing and coughing
- when washing in the baths
- when using shared toilets
- insect bites
- through food
- through the water
- using clothes and shoes
- through utensils
- in the swimming pool
Prevention
For the prevention of HIV infection should:
- to Avoid unprotected sex.
- to Avoid direct contact with the blood of another person to avoid not only HIV but also hepatitis and other infections.
