Zhumabek Akhmetovich Tashenev served as chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR, and then headed the government of the republic. He became one of the first leaders of the republic during the development of virgin lands.

At the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the name of Zhumabek Tashenev was given to one of the central streets in Astana, a city that once could simply move away with the entire Tselinny Territory to the neighboring republic. But it became the capital of independent Kazakhstan.
