Director of the Institute of Asian Studies of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Professor of the Department of the Far East of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Doctor of Historical Sciences Gera Nikolaevich Kim was awarded with the Order of Dostyk II degree for his service in strengthening peace, friendship and cooperation between people.

Gera Nikolaevich Kim graduated from Kirov State University in 1977, studied world history in German for 10 years. In 1990, he defended his PhD thesis “Socio-Cultural Development of Koreans of Kazakhstan in 1946-1966”. After a scientific internship at the Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies of Seoul National University and returning to Kazakhstan, G.N. Kim worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1999 he defended his doctoral dissertation “History of Korean Immigration. The second half of the XIX century – 1945.” In 2000 he received the title of professor. From 1999 to 2001 he headed the Department of Korean Studies and simultaneously held the position of Deputy Dean for Scientific Work.

Gera Nikolaevich played an important role in the formation of the Kazakhstani school of Korean studies. Under his leadership, 25 scientists defended their dissertations. Professor Kim has taught at foreign universities in South Korea, the USA and Japan, and is the author of textbooks. For many years the scientist has been heading the scientific journal "News of Korean Studies in Central Asia".

The merits of Professor G.N. Kim were awarded: "Kazakstannyn Yenbek Sinirgen Kayratkeri", "For Merits in the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan". He has a number of orders and medals of Kazakhstan and South Korea.
