INTERNATIONAL ACTION DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS

An international Round Table dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Tests took place in the new United Nations building in Almaty. The event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with a representative office in Almaty, the UN Information Bureau in Kazakhstan and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

It should be mentioned that on August 29, 1991, by the decree of the first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarbayev the world’s largest Semipalatinsk nuclear test site was closed. This day, at the initiative of the Head of State, was approved as International Day against Nuclear Tests at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly. The UN General Assembly called on the UN, the states of the world, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to make efforts to stop nuclear tests on the globe.

The Round Table aimed at developing dialogue on international security issues by actively involving the young generation of the country. The First Vice-Rector of Al-Farabi KazNU M. Burkitbaev, the Representative of the UN Global Communications Department in Kazakhstan V. Samek, Head of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty E.U. Iskakov, Ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, the First and Permanent Representative of the UN, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Professor, A.Kh.Arystanbekova, Director of the Center for Security and Cooperation of KazNU, Professor K.I. Bayzakova made a speech during the Round Table.
