Preparing Engineers Hydrologists in Kazakhstan was organized by Department of Geography at the University at the request of the Kazakh Hydrometeorological Service Management and other organizations interested in a specialist hydrologist higher qualification.The first set of students performed in 1963, first edition engineers hydrologists took place in 1968. Department itself hydrology opened in September 1966 and is currently the only one in the Republic, provides training, hydrologists.

Currently the staff of the department consists of 17 people, 14 of them - faculty, 3 - instructional support staff. All teachers have academic degrees, among them: 3 - professor, 9 - associate professors and senior lecturers.
