Department of sociology of named Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, has already existed more than 20 years. Institutionalization of sociological education inextricablylinked with the establishing of sociological direction in university and creation of chair of sociology in 1998.

Department has highly-qualified faculty, which major part were staff with basic sociological education, department of sociology and social work departments graduated. Currently there are 36% from total teachers amount are doctors of science, candidates of science - 22% from total amount.

Department has multilevel system of preparation by sociology, which include bachelor masters and doctoral students. There are two specialities: sociology and social work , establishing of last one speciality became very important event for chair. Social work rapidly developing interdisciplinary industry modern social science, which actuality due increasing significance interests to new one profession «social work».
Scientific activity of department include the organization and carrying out of scientific research accordingly department directions in international, Kazakh, regional and university research program and projects, also on grant grounds. General topic of department outcomes – «Civil society and social problem modern Kazakhstan society issue». Main grounds set of on modern concept of modernization, globalization, sustainable development and human rights are investigate functioning social agencies and institute, social stratification processes and differentiation in modernization conditions Kazakhstan.
