On February 15, 2021, a video conference dedicated to the significant date was held at the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Philology and World Languages of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The conference aim was to develop students’ patriotism, instill spiritual and moral values and teach young generation to respect modern history in real time.

An interesting discussion on the topic “Heroes of Our Time” was held on the online platform among the first-year students of the specialties “Foreign Philology” and “Translation Studies”. The topic of the video conference was touched upon in the informative presentations about the war in Afghanistan made by the students.

The military conflict in Afghanistan between the government forces of the country, supported by a limited contingent of Soviet troops on the one hand, and the mojahed paramilitary groups, lasted from 1979 to 1989. In the DRA, Soviet soldiers resisted the further spread of international terrorism to the borders of the then common country.

Speakers managed to organize a kind of “interactive” platform, collecting not only information from various sources, but also bring it to life with the help of the memories of soldiers-internationalists from the regions of our country. Showing a great respect to “Afghan soldiers”, the students interviewed Kazakhstan veterans of the last war. A unique dialogue took place between representatives of different generations – the heroes of the Afghan war and the keepers of their military deeds!
