SUPERVISOR Information Management Officer (IMO)

Background

Since its establishment in 2007, OCHA Sub-regional office in Central Asia has coordinated humanitarian response to nine emergencies in the region. Starting 1 January 2012, the office’s coverage has expanded to cover the countries of the South Caucasus. As the Regional Office for Caucasus and Central Asia (ROCCA) OCHA promotes early warning and disaster preparedness, and works towards strengthening the national capacity and that of the international community to respond to slow and sudden-onset disasters quickly and in a coordinated fashion.

The main goal of ROCCA’s information management (IM) strategy is to promote regional IM preparedness, provide IM support to humanitarian response activities in the region, and establish and maintain regional IM coordination structures. The scope of information management duties includes data collection, data processing and analysis, data mapping and visualization, capacity-building and data dissemination.

Purpose of the internship

The internship is intended to:

Promote a better understanding of international problems and give an insight into the work of the United Nations

To provide UNOCHA with the able assistance of an outstanding young student specializing in a field related to their own work

Scope of Work

The GIS Intern will be expected to work full-time for the duration of two months. During the internship, the following activities are to be completed:

Assist in designing and developing reference maps

Digitizing geographic features from existing maps

Assist in data cleaning and analysis

Install a Windows based file server, set up a directory structure including user rights and establish remote access to file server contents.

Intern will be expected to perform other tasks, as required.

At the end of the internship, the ROCCA IMO will provide full feedback on the job performed, and upon successful completion of the assigned duties, intern may request a letter of recommendation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in a graduate school at the time of application and during the internship that is relevant for the internship

Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, GIS related studies or any other related field

Language requirements:

Fluency in oral and written English and Russian

Experience:

No experience required. Background in data collection, data processing or GIS applications preferred.
