The Faculty of Oriental Studies was established in 1989. The study of Oriental languages (in particular, Arabic) at the university dates back to the 70s of the XXth century.

Four departments are actively working at the faculty: the Department of the Middle East and South Asia, the Department of Sinology, the Department of TURKSOY and the Department of the Far East in which eight Oriental languages are taught: Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Japanese, Hindi and Urdu, as well as 2 Western languages: English and French. The teaching staff of the faculty consists of more than 130 people, including 10 doctors and professors, 25 candidates of sciences and associate professors, 28 PhD.

Every year visiting professors from leading universities of China, Iran, Japan, Turkey and South Korea and Arab countries give lectures and conduct master classes at the faculty.

The faculty has research centers such as the Center for Arabic Studies, the M. Gandhi Center, the M.A. Jinn Center, the Center for Iranian Studies, the Iran-Turan Center, the Center for Tajik Language and Culture, the Al-Kitab Center, the Center for Monuments of Writing and Spiritual Heritage, the Center for History and Culture of Azerbaijan, The International Center of Korean Studies, the Institute of Asian Studies, the Hanguk Research (Educational/Consulting) Center, the Scientific and Educational Center for the Study of Japan and Central Asia (Almaty office of the University of Tsukuba), the Center for the Study of Modern China.
