A ROADMAP FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INNOVATIVE ACTIVITIES WILL BE CREATED

At the next online meeting of the Academic Council of KazNU, the results of research and innovation activities for 2020 were summed up. The agenda includes the tasks of transforming a modern research center and promoting the university in international rankings.

The report on the main topic of the meeting was presented by the acting Vice-rector for scientific and innovative activities T.S. Ramazanov, giving a detailed picture of how the tasks of research and innovation are being implemented in the country's leading university. It is this direction that determines the achievements and rating of the university, therefore, great attention is paid to it at KazNU. So, according to the speaker, for the reporting period, the university has implemented 435 research projects with a total funding of 5856.5 million tenge. This number included projects: grant financing of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC "Science Foundation", for program-targeted financing of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, research work within the framework of economic agreements with organizations and enterprises, grants from international foundations, etc.

Many international and republican events in KazNU (conferences, round tables, seminars) were held in 2020 as part of the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of Al-Farabi under the auspices of UNESCO. In particular, 60 anniversary international and republican conferences, round tables, scientific webinars were organized and held together with international organizations and leading universities of the world (Oxford, Istanbul, Sofia, Athens, as well as the Universities of Damascus, Egypt, Berlin, Zurich, Vienna and many others).

Further, the presentation presented data on the publication activity of scientists and teachers of KazNU. al-Farabi, reflects the dynamics of scientific publications in the Scopus database, which showed clear progress compared to previous years (640 in 2016 and 1071 in 2021).

Students of the university take an active part in research activities. More than 70 projects of students and young scientists of KazNU took part in the annual competition for the best student innovative business ideas. Within the framework of the SBI of the university, student start-up companies have been created, such as: "Prototype of an electric car," Ethno-tourism "," Summer school ", etc.

It should be noted that KazNU named after Al-Farabi won the award "Leader in the number of publications in the Web of Science Core Collection in the subject area" Physics "over the past 3 years among the universities of Kazakhstan. The head of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Modeling, Professor Isakhov Alibek was recognized as the winner in the “Highly Cited Kazakhstani Author” nomination. An independent award "For contribution to the development of scientometrics and evaluation of scientific activity in Kazakhstan" was awarded to the director of the Center for Physical and Chemical Research Methods and Analysis of Al-Farabi KazNU, Professor Bulat Kenesov.

The speaker's detailed report contained information on the training and certification of scientific personnel, the development of the postdoctoral institute in 2020, innovation and other areas of research.

During the discussion of the report, acting Vice-rector for scientific and innovative activities T.S. Ramazanov, suggestions and ideas were expressed to improve work in this area. So, the chairman of the board - rector of KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebayev focused on the fact that science should be fruitful and beneficial to society. And at the university, it is necessary to create all the conditions for its transformation into a research university, it is necessary to prepare a roadmap for innovation and work very hard, developing this very important area, according to the results of which - advanced projects, developments - the university will be evaluated in society, the country and the world.

Director of the Center for Strategic Development G.S. Minajeva highlighted the topical issue of promoting KazNU in international ratings. The main achievement in this area is that the university made a breakthrough, significantly advancing in the QS ranking and taking 165th place. According to the rector of KazNU Zh.Tuimebayev, this is a convincing proof of the high competitiveness of the university in the world market of scientific and educational services, which means that the university is attractive for local applicants, foreign students and professors. In addition, KazNU named after al-Farabi was awarded the Five Stars excellence mark. The university entered the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (THE IR) for the first time, which assesses universities according to 17 sustainable development goals.

Speaker highlighted in her report the weaknesses of the university in international rankings, in particular, in the QS WUR ranking, concluding that the university has a lot to do in order to strengthen its positions. It was proposed: to increase the competitiveness and export potential of educational services, scientometric indicators (number of publications in high-ranking journals, citation of scientific articles), reflected in international rankings, to conduct systematic work on the commercialization of scientific developments of university scientists, to increase the image and recognition of the university in the international community, and also promote educational programs in QS & THE by subject subject rankings.
