Cheryl Reed Investigative Stories

2/22/2023

At the beginning of the school year, al-Farabi KazNU hosted a meeting with American journalist Cheryl Reed, the topic of the conversation: "Journalistic Investigations." At this educational lecture, Cheryl shared her experience, talked about her own investigations, articles, books. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal Freedom of Information Act that allows the full or partial release of information and documents from the United States government. Cheryl Reed leads such investigations, with reliable sources and reliable information, and these criteria are the basis of investigative journalism.

An American journalist told us about her articles and the importance of this industry of journalism, the opportunity to influence the unfair state of affairs. For example, after her article "Sexual violence in a school for children with disabilities," this school zak Since the event was held for students, many of our students were shocked by the words "sex, drugs, AIDS, prostitution" because in our society it is not customary to talk about this, and our country is full of the same problems. I think it's time to start covering such issues honestly. So Cheryl's article "Prostitutes Who Transmit AIDS," which refers to girls of light behavior infected with this disease who infect their "clients." The people who used their services simply did not know that the girl was sick. This article contributed to the consideration of the law on the mandatory informing of your partner that you are sick (if you are sick). That is, such problems need to be covered, do not be afraid and ashamed of such topics. Maybe if we write more about such a common topic, for example, as domestic violence, then our law will be tightened in Kazakhstan.

Of course, in the United States there are more independent media than in the countries of the post-Soviet space, this was noted by the American journalist herself. Because many journalists in the CIS are imprisoned and have no protection. But in spite of everything, you need to professionally do your job. Publicist gave parting words to future journalists, editors, publishers: "Never give up, do not be afraid of anything, work hard and fairly. Often, after a series of "no," hands go down and something breaks inside, but it is at this moment that you find new inspiration. Therefore, do not give up. "

The meeting was wonderful. In the United States, as in any country, there are acute problems that need to be covered in the media. All students were interested in this topic, since after the completion of the presentation Cheryl was thrown with questions, and she very kindly and understandably gave answers. Based on this, I believe that all those present have learned a lot of new things for themselves and are ready to grow in the profession, to improve the domestic media!
