EP purpose

The educational program is focused on training highly qualified specialists with fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of meteorology, who are able to:

-     explain the nature of main physical processes and phenomena occurring in the atmosphere;

-     process and analyze meteorological, upper-air and satellite information;

-     organize monitoring of the state of the atmosphere in real time;

-     assess the development of atmospheric processes and weather conditions;

-     apply modern methods and technical means in the preparation of weather forecasts of various lead times;

-     evaluate current climate changes;

-     make warnings of dangerous natural (hydrometeorological) events;

-     assess the meteorological factors affecting the state of the environment;

-     apply in practice the developed recommendations for the air basin protection;

-     provide aviation meteorological services.

Educational outcome

ON1. to describe the basic laws of functioning and development of nature and society based on knowledge of basic laws and methods of natural sciences, physics and mathematics; to explain and interpret the nature of basic physical processes occurring in the atmosphere;

ON2. to organize, efficiently conduct and transmit all types of meteorological measurements and observations using digital technologies, professional terminology, codes and regulatory documents;

ON3. to create a rational meteorological observation network; to check the quality of the network of meteorological stations and posts; to collect the necessary hydrometeorological information and make its analysis; to organize special meteorological observations; to use various ways of presenting meteorological information;

ON4. to explain and describe the physical processes of cloud formation and precipitation; to systematize them according to morphological and genetic features of education; to explain the nature of the occurrence of various optical and electrical phenomena in the atmosphere;

ON5. to use modern and promising methods of atmospheric sounding to obtain high-quality and representative aerological, radiometeorological and satellite information used in the preparation of weather forecasts;

ON6. to process and analyze weather maps, baric topography maps, upper-air charts; to identify features of the development of atmospheric processes and weather conditions for compilation of weather forecasts;

ON7. to work with models of general and mesoscale atmospheric circulation and interpret their results for weather forecasts;

ON8. to make weather forecasts of various lead times, specialized meteorological forecasts, warnings about the occurrence of hazardous and spontaneous hydrometeorological phenomena and deliver the information to the user;

ON9. to evaluate hydrometeorological phenomena that are dangerous for various branches of economic activity, to explain the reasons for their occurrence and make a forecast;

ON10. to calculate the main characteristics of climate; to diagnose and analyze climate change trends; to compile an annual review of climatic conditions; to offer a national climate monitoring product using WMO software;

ON11. to assess meteorological factors affecting the state of the environment and to apply in practice developed recommendations for their accounting in order to protect the air basin; to organize the air quality monitoring in real time, including using radar and satellite observations;

ON12. to write an analytical review of the current state and trends of meteorology development; present research results taking into account personal goals, motives and further professional growth; work in a team.

Academic activity 

Academic activity of the EP is carried out:

-    within the framework of existing regulatory documents and methodological recommendations in the field of higher education in the field of hydrology science;

-    as a result of the implementation of regulatory documents regulating the educational and methodological process at the university;

-    generalization and dissemination of new normative legal acts concerning methodological work;

-    current and long-term planning of the educational and methodological work of the university; coordination of the educational and methodological complex of the discipline (EMCD) of the department for compliance with regulatory legal acts, the working curriculum and the educational program;

-    monitoring the provision of the educational process with teaching materials, documenting the results;

-    development of teaching materials; development and implementation of the working curriculum.

Scientific activity

Scientific directions of the Department: fundamental and applied research of hydrometeorological processes of different spatial and temporal scale, the interaction of the atmosphere and the ocean, the study of the laws of modern climate change and their impact on socio-economic development, the formation of water resources; recreational assessment of the regions of Kazakhstan; development and development of physical and mathematical models of the natural environment (atmosphere, ocean, inland waters, etc.).); a study of the predictability of hydrometeorological processes and the development of methods of hydrometeorological forecasts of different lead time, including forecasts of hazardous and severe weather events.

Material and technical base of EP:

-     Training and laboratory meteorological center (ULMC), which includes:

ü  laboratory of meteorological measurement methods;

ü  laboratory of aerology and radiometeorology;

ü  training meteorological station with automated information-measuring system "Weather»;

ü  weather training Bureau;

ü  station atmospheric monitoring, measuring complex "SKAT»;

ü  center for reception and archiving of operational meteorological information;

ü  SYNOPTIC archive.

-     Distance learning centre – opened with the assistance Of the regional hydrology centre of the world meteorological organization with the support of the world Bank.

-     Laboratory of climate change.

-     Comsats centre for climate and sustainability (CCU).

-     Environmental monitoring laboratory.

-     Water resources laboratory.

-     Laboratory of GIS for geographical studies.

-     Laboratory of geoinformation mapping.

International activity

3-4 year students have the opportunity to study at leading universities in the world as a part of the academic mobility program. In particular, there is an agreement with the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (St. Petersburg, Russian Federation), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland), Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), Regional Meteorological Training Center of WMO, Hydrometeorological Center of Russia (Moscow, Russian Federation).

Lecturers of the educational program undergo internships and educational courses abroad to exchange experience, gain new competencies, and improve educational skills.

Quality assurance (Accreditation, rating, work with employers)

International accreditation, national accreditation.

This educational program has passed the international accreditation of the agency ACQUIN, the validity period of accreditation is up to September 30, 2023. According to the rating of educational programs among universities of Kazakhstan IAAR (Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating) and IQAA (Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education ) takes the first places.
