2nd year PhD student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University Bizhanova Nazerke Alimkyzy became one of the best young scientists among the youth of Commonwealth of Independent States! She was awarded a badge for her contribution to the development of science. The Best Young Scientist project was organized by the International Centre for Sports, Education and Science “Genius”. The 1st-year doctoral student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology Kusmangazinov Adil became one of the best young scientists among the CIS countries. He was awarded a medal and a Letter of Thanks during the international online conference "Education and Science of the XXI Century", organized by the International Center for Sports, Education and Science "Genius". Researchers from al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Institute of Zoology (IoZ) and the Almaty Nature Reserve (ANR) conducted field trips in the Ile and Kungei Alatau (Northern Tien Shan) during winter to study rare carnivorous mammals. The expedition was attended by: Nazerke Bizhanova, lecturer and PhD-student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources and Junior Researcher at IoZ; Alexey Grachev, Head of the Laboratory of Mammalogy at the IoZ; Saltore Saparbayev, researcher at the IoZ and the ANR, Sergei Bespalov and Maxim Bespalov, senior laboratory assistants and field experts at the IoZ.

Together with them on the expedition were filmmakers Arthur Gal and Steeve Voccia, who filmed researchers and wild animals for their documentary film about the wild nature of Kazakhstan. Researchers from Kazakhstan in their interviews for the film talked about elusive carnivores – the snow leopard and the Turkestan lynx, inhabiting the mountains of the Northern Tien Shan, as well as ways of studying them using traditional field methods and camera trapping.

A second year master's student of the specialty "6M061300-Geobotany", Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources Saptaykhanova Gaini won a grant under the Abay-Verne program and completed the 2019-2020 academic year at the University of Lorraine (France, Nancy). On December 29, 2020, she successfully defended her master's thesis in English on the topic : "Branches as a potential source of forest extractives". Master's work was carried out in the laboratory LERMAB (Laboratoire d'études et de recherche sur le matériau bois) and in the Scientific Institute INRAE (Institut National de Recherche en Agriculture, Alimentation et Environnement) within the framework of the project « ExtraFor_Est ».
