QS WorldWide International Forum of Leading Universities of the World at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU)

QS WORLDWIDE is a leading annual higher education conference that connects international educators, senior academics, administrators and government from across Central Asia and beyond.

Held in Kazakhstan, this conference themed “Journey to Global Prominence: Harmony of Human Heritage and Advanced Technology” is jointly organised by QS and the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The International student festival that organized by al-Farabi KazNU approached to the end.

Several hours of rehearsals, controversy, discussions and worries are left behind.

1-st year undergraduate students from “Sunny”-Turkmenistan had represented our Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. They have subdued all viewers and guests of the University with their amazing talents, intelligence and gumption. In addition, they have performed impressive, full of mystery and flame ancient folk dance «Kushtdepti». Experiencing the increasing rhythm it was impossible to sit still hearing it. «It feels like unknown power starts to pulse in your arms and legs, making you clap and dance» - the audience shares their impression. The identity of the music and choreography in combination with professionalism and sincere emotionality have been transmitted to the audience that everyone has remembered.

It is undoubtedly that the youth needs such events and the forum in this case is the generator of ideas and is an excellent motivator. It is also team spirit and worthy competition. Many thanks to the organizers of the Forum! Many thanks to the students from Turkmenistan who represented the department of Biodiversity and Bioresourses. Thanks for their performance, great organization and activity!

Short description of the content:

The great German Naturalists as Johann Erasmus Sievers, Peter Simon Pallas, Karl Ferdinand Kessler, Alexander von Schrenk, Eduard August von Regel, and many others worked in the Russian Imperial Academy of Science XVIII-XIX-thes centuries, had performed hard expeditions and described many new species of animals and plants in Central Asia. Their contribution to world science was reflected in the names of many local species of animals and plants, e.g. Triplophysa strauchii (fish), Perca schrenkii (fish), copperhead snake of Pallas, Picea schrenkiana (firtree), apple tree of Sivers.

Two sites have been chosen for ecological summer school 2019 that reflect biological diversity of the region. The valley of the Ili River is located in the desert and steppe, and the small canyon Ters-Butak is located between leaf wood and coniferous forest. Both sites are very suitable for investigations of local fauna and flora. Students will be able to learn typical fauna of arid lands, steppes, rivers, forests and mountains.

All participants of the summer school lived in tents and made pedestrian excursion for investigate animals and plants in their environment. This approach to organization of the summer ecological school gave students imagination how were performed expeditions of naturalist in the former time and how field investigations of animals are performed now. It demonstrated that zoological field investigations need many muscle forces, and are conducted in rough living conditions.

All data about observed animals and plants were discussed with students and explained them through conceptions of biocentrism, value of wild nature and ecosystem services. The summer school had big interest not for zoologists and botanists only, but for other students as well. One of the general rules of the summer school was investigations without damage to the nature that is important for ecological awareness of students.

New information was offered to students via two stapes as 1) theoretical description of characteristics of the natural objects, and 2) doing practical field observations.

In accordance with the curriculum of the faculty and with order No. 4-1770, from May 27 to June 15, 2019, 2nd year students of the specialty “5B060700-Biology” of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University underwent field training to consolidate the theoretical material in practice in the territory of the sports camp of KazNU in Issyk-Kul (Bosteri village, Kyrgyz Republic). The purpose of field practice: consolidation of theoretical material in the disciplines “Biodiversity of plants and animals” and “Zoology” by introducing representatives of the studied groups of plants and animals in natural conditions. In particular, the students analyzed and got acquainted with the flora and fauna of the Kungei Alatau ridge of the Northern Tien Shan, and also got acquainted with representatives of the algal flora and hydrofauna of Lake Issyk-Kul.
