"Open Door Day"

On February 24, 2023, an "Open Day" was held in offline and online format, organized by the teaching staff of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, to provide professional guidance to students in grades 10-11 and students. 55 students from 10 schools with their teachers came to the open day, 30 students from 5 schools took part in career guidance, got acquainted with a lot of information about our university, expanded their knowledge in the specialties of our faculty. He asked his questions and got answers.

The Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience actively cooperates with employers who provide their resources for industrial and professional internships, where students, undergraduates and doctoral students receive professional skills and competencies, and are engaged in scientific research. Employers regularly hold seminars, presentations and excursions. After graduation, many graduates are employed at the place of internship. The department cooperates most closely with the Institute of Genetics and Physiology.

KAZNU HOSTED AN INTERNATIONAL ROUND TABLE ON THE TOPIC "INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES"

The purpose of the round table was to discuss the problems, achievements and prospects for the development of bioinformatics and neuroscience based on an integrative approach and the latest breakthroughs in computer, biological and human sciences.

The invited speaker of the round table is Professor of the University of Sharjah Rifat Akram Hamoudi, College of Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences (Sharjah, UAE).

Prof. Rifat Akram Hamoudi is a graduate of King's College London University (London, UK) and the University of Cambridge where he received his PhD in bioinformatics. The doctoral dissertation of Professor Hamoudi was devoted to the study of the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of MALT-lymphoma using information technology and genetic markers of pathology.

Professor Hamoudi is a recognized world-class expert in bioinformatics, biomathematics, computational medicine, bioengineering and biomedicine. Professor Hamoudi is the permanent scientific director of large-scale international research projects funded by such well-known large charitable organizations as the Al-Jalila Foundation, Sharjah Research Academy, UK Breast Cancer Research Foundations and the Wellcome Trust.

Professor Hamoudi is the author of two international patents and more than 200 publications in authoritative high-ranking scientific publications indexed in the Scopus database, including Lancet, Science, Cell, Nature. Hirsch citation index - 48.

Professor Hamoudi has a large number of students around the world, is a member of the UK Academy of Higher Education, as well as the developer of new master's programs in genomics, bioinformatics and statistics for engineers and biomedical scientists. He developed a new strategy for online courses based on the interactive philosophy of FLIP.

Currently, the laboratory of the University of Sharjah, headed by Professor Hamoudi, is conducting a genetic analysis of biomaterials as part of the research project "EEG / MRI study of brain development, emotional-cognitive functions and their genetic markers in various age groups", funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and implemented by employees Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of KazNU under the guidance of the Head of the Department Professor A.M.Kustubaeva. Also, the staff of the department headed by Professor A.M.Kustubaeva, together with USh and Skoltech (Skolovo), participate in the international project "Building models of interpretable artificial intelligence and deep learning based on integrative data of neuroimaging and genetics for predicting abnormal emotional development", funded by the Foundation University of Sharjah.

In addition, Prof. Rifat Hamoudi is a foreign supervisor of a PhD doctoral student at the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience, specializing in 8D05109 - Neuroscience.

UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH SIGNS MOU WITH AL-FARABI KAZAKHSTAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

With the aim of enhancing academic and research cooperation in various fields and scientific disciplines, the University of Sharjah (UOS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University (KazNU). The MOU was signed on behalf of the UOS by its Chancellor, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, and by Prof. Zhanseit Kanseituly Tuimebayev, Chairman of the Board-Rector. The MoU stipulates the exchange of knowledge, the enactment of faculty and students’ mobility programs, and the development of joint training programs, lectures and postgraduate courses in Neurogenomics, Computational Neuroscience, physics and artificial intelligence applications in medicine.

Prof. Al Naimiy, stressed on the importance of this MoU to promote the exchange of academic research experiences between the two universities; he added that the UoS, with the support and guidance of His Highness, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah and President of the UOS, became one of the leading universities in the Arab region that offers various academic programs in a wide range of disciplines that suits the needs of the labour market.

From his side, Prof. Tuimebayev, praised the academic achievements accomplished by the UOS at the local, regional and global levels during the past 25 years since its establishment, expressing his happiness over the signing of the MoU that will broaden cooperation between UOS and KazNU in various fields, as well as establishing new research and education tracks in the field of Neuroscience and AI.

The MoU signing was attended by Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine, Prof. Rifat Hamoudi, Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Computational Medicine and Head of Bioinformatics Research and Functional Genomics Group, Dr. Tarek Merabtene, Director of the Office of International Relations and Prof. Almira Kustubayeva, Head of the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience, KazNU.

Round table "Regulation and adaptation of body mechanisms in different age periods"

On June 28, 2021, in the educational building number 6 in room 214 and in online (ZOOM) format, the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience organized and held a round table "Regulation and adaptation of body mechanisms in different age periods", dedicated to the 80th birthday Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor, Alexander Borisovich Elantsev. The purpose of the round table was not only to congratulate the hero of the day, but to discuss modern problems of regulation and adaptation of physiological mechanisms of the body in different age periods of life.

Electroencephalographic equipment ANT-Neuro (Netherlands) was purchased for the ongoing research project «EEG/MRT study of the brain development, emotional-cognitive functions, and genetic markers in different age groups». EEG equipment based on new technology will allow to conduct experiments research in the field of Neuroscience based on international standards.
