Teaching and research interests. Dr. Gulnar Kendirbai is a professor at Columbia University (New York, USA), where since 2004 she has been teaching courses on the history of Central Asia, the nomads of Eurasia, the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Her research interests also include colonialism, nationalism, ethnicity, Islam, nomadism, cultural anthropology, social and intellectual history of Central Asia.

Education. In 1979 she graduated with honors from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia. After graduation, she defended two PhD theses at the Faculty of Folklore at the Eötvös-Lorand University (1987, Budapest, Hungary) and at the Eastern European Institute of the University of Tübingen (2003, Germany). The title of the first doctoral dissertation is “Bridging Colonial Gaps: Kazakh Intelligentsia and the Imperial State”, the second doctoral dissertation is “Theoretical Problems of Folklorism and the Countries of Central Europe and Kazakhstan”.

Professional career. From 2004 to the present, Gulnar Kendirbay has been an associate Professor of history in the Department of history and at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University in New York city. She taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses on nomads of the Eurasian steppes, Imperial, Soviet and post-Soviet history of Central Asia, Islam and Islamic modernity (jadidism).

Her publications include: two monographs Earth and people. Russian colonization of the Kazakh steppe (Berlin: Schwarz, 2002 ANOR; 12) and Russian management practices in Eurasia. Power dynamics on the outskirts, 16th-mid-19th centuries, London, Routledge, 2020, as well as a number of articles published in the journals: Inner Asia, Central Asian Survey, Nationalities Papers, etc.
