Training, seminar for university staff by Professor Nils Birkeland

11/26/2019

At the Department of Biotechnology between 17.11 to 29.11 series of lectures and seminars were conducted by a visiting professor from the University of Bergen (Norway) Nils Birkeland, who is a known specialist in the field of applied microbiology, namely, he works with thermophilic bacteria using them in Biotechnology. In addition, his work is aimed at identifying molecular adaptation to extreme temperatures using extremophilic microorganisms from various environments, an in-depth understanding of the enormous natural microbial diversity in extreme habitats, elucidating the mechanisms and regulation of the biological oxidation of methane, metagenomics to gain knowledge about the survival and evolution of Shigella-like bacteria.

Today Niels gave us a lecture on the use of thermophilic bacteria in production. It was pleasure for Instructors of the Department of Biotechnology to listen to Professor Nils Birkeland.

INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON INDUSTRIAL SYNTHETIC BIOTECHNOLOGY

11/20/2019

In early August 2019, I received by mail information about a 21-day internship at Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. The internship period is from October 14 to November 2. Carried out the collection of documents according to their requirements. After 2 weeks, I received a notification letter that I won this competition among 150 nominees (participants). Under the terms of the internship, the host institute paid all expenses.

This training course examined theories, practices, and applications of industrial synthetic biotechnology.

The course consisted of 2 sections:

1. Technical section: basic theory, methodology, technological progress and the use of synthetic biotechnology (chemicals, fuels and lubricants, food and feed additives).

2. Experimental: a series of experiments in synthetic biology to strengthen technical skills.

In addition, he participated in MES-2019: a metabolic engineering summit with 500 participants from 20 countries (MES 2019, October 20-22, Tianjin).

In addition, I attended lectures by world famous scientists. Keynote speakers: Sang Yup Li, professor at the Korea Leading Science and Technology Institute (KAIST), and a number of other international scholars, such as Professor Jibin Sun, Professor Янхэ Ма, Professor Yong Tao, Professor Shuangyan Tang and other TIB professors. Another research organization of China.

At the end of the practice, a memorandum of cooperation between the treasury and MEB on student exchange and visiting professors was signed.

PARTICIPATION AS PART OF THE ERASMUS PROJECT IN LILLE, FRANCE

In the frame of Erasmus+ project Konuspayeva Gaukhar from Department of biotechnology Al-Farabi University  participated in academic mobility of staff between October 14 and 18 2019.

Academical lecture on “Plan control” in amphitheater was given by invited professor from private company according to her professional field of expertise to students of 5th year of ISA (equivalent of Master 2). Lecture was given in English for more than 40 students from more than 15 countries. All students have already professional experiences in Food Agroindustry.

Practical work on “Interaction of ingredients” was observed with French speaking students of 4th year of ISA. In the frame of their industrial project of this semester they should produce some different products and to analyze interactions of ingredients between them during practical works Discussions was achieved by groups (9 groups in total) and in whole discussions of team (around 35 students).

In the frame of cooperation between ISA and ISEN 5th year students of ISA French speaking group work with students from ISEN to apply some numeric technologies for elaborating food products made by food engineers. Practical work on “Facilitation graphique” was observed. The different ways of presentation of technological process, final products and recipes were elaborated.

In the frame of production of some snacks she gave 16 hours of lectures of “Protein and formulation”, “Fermentation”, Lipids and formulation” and “Environment, pesticides, animal products” was given under lectures for French speaking group of 5th years students.
