Expeditions in the Northern Tien Shan with filmmakers from France

Researchers from al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Institute of Zoology (IoZ) and the Almaty Nature Reserve (ANR) conducted field trips in the Ile and Kungei Alatau (Northern Tien Shan) during winter to study rare carnivorous mammals. The expedition was attended by: Nazerke Bizhanova, lecturer and PhD-student of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources and Junior Researcher at IoZ; Alexey Grachev, Head of the Laboratory of Mammalogy at the IoZ; Saltore Saparbayev, researcher at the IoZ and the ANR, Sergei Bespalov and Maxim Bespalov, senior laboratory assistants and field experts at the IoZ.

Together with them on the expedition were filmmakers Arthur Gal and Steeve Voccia, who filmed researchers and wild animals for their documentary film about the wild nature of Kazakhstan. Researchers from Kazakhstan in their interviews for the film talked about elusive carnivores – the snow leopard and the Turkestan lynx, inhabiting the mountains of the Northern Tien Shan, as well as ways of studying them using traditional field methods and camera trapping.

"Conservation of biodiversity and rational use of natural resources for sustainable development"

On April 23, in Nur-Sultan, Astana International University (AIU) held an International Scientific and Practical Conference on the topic: "Science and Education" dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Day of Science Workers. At the opening of the conference, the President of the International University "Astana" Irsaliev Serik Aztayevich made a speech. Then the reports were heard in sections. 163 thesis were divided into 6 sections. The section "Conservation of biodiversity and rational use of natural resources for sustainable development" was chaired by the chairman of the conference: PhD, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Dean of the Higher School of Natural Sciences Seitkan Ainur Seitkankyzy, members of the commissions, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Myrzagalieva Anar Bazarovna,, Avezova Ayman, Ph.D. Karipbaeva Nurziya Shaikenovna. 3rd year students of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, took the 1st place: Zholdasbek Ayana, Akbolat Gaukhar, Gusmaulemova Alua, scientific supervisor: Orazov Aidyn Yergaliyevich. The materials were prepared as part of the final qualifying work (diploma work). Congratulations to the leader and students with prizes.

Congratulations to Nazerke Bizhanova on completing the Rufford Small Grants project!

A 2nd year PhD-student of the Department of Biodiversity and Biological Resources, Nazerke Bizhanova completed a project on the topic: “Population and conservation status of the Turkestan lynx (Lynx lynx isabellina Blyth, 1847) in the Kazakh part of the Northern Tien Shan”. The project was funded by the Rufford Foundation (Rufford Small Grants for Nature Conservation).

Members of the research group: Nazerke Bizhanova, PhD-student at al-Farabi KazNU and Junior Researcher at the Institute of Zoology, Project Leader; Alexey Grachev, Head of the Laboratory of Mammalogy at the Institute of Zoology; Yuri Grachev, Leading Researcher of the Institute of Zoology; Saltore Saparbayev, Researcher at the Almaty Nature Reserve and the Institute of Zoology; Erlik Baidavletov, Researcher at the Institute of Zoology and the Ile-Balkhash Natural Reserve; Sergei Bespalov and Maxim Bespalov, senior laboratory assistants and field experts at the Institute of Zoology.

Thanks to the project, it became possible to study the rare subspecies of the Eurasian lynx in more detail. These studies are part of Nazerke Bizhanova’s doctoral thesis on the topic: “Distribution and subspecies diagnosability of the Turkestan lynx (Lynx lynx isabellina Blyth, 1847) in the Northern Tien Shan”.

The Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology invites you to take part in a round table on the topic "Modern Problems of Neuroscience"with the participation of a foreign scientist Bazbek Davletov.

Professor of Sheffield University Bazbek Davletov makes a report on "Novel botulinum molecules for treatment of chronic pain". You can ask all your questions on this topic and in general on neurobiology.

Bazbek Davletov is a world-renowned innovative scientist who has gained international fame as an authoritative expert in the molecular mechanisms of neuronal functioning, cancer biology, the action of botulinum neurotoxins, and the neurobiology of pain. Professor Davletov is a student of the Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine Professor Thomas Sudhoff, an honorary neuroscientist in England, the owner of the prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Fellow grant.

Professor Davletov received his Ph. D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and for 15 years headed the laboratory at the University of Cambridge, doing basic research in the field of neuroscience.

Currently, Professor Bazbek Davletov heads the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sheffield (UK), where he develops technologies for the assembly of biomolecules, neuron activity blockers, drugs for chronic pain, and anti-cancer biologics. Bazbek Davletov has a high publication activity and citation rate (H-index-43).

The second stage of the Republican Student Olympiad in the specialty " Biology - 5В060700"

On April 27 - 28, 2021, at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University the second stage of the Republican Student Olympiad in the specialty " Biology - 5В060700" was held. The total number of participants - 33 students from 8 universities of the country.

The format of Olympiad - online (video conference on the Zoom platform) and there were two rounds:

1. Situational tasks in the basic disciplines of the specialty (4 tasks, maximum score - 100).

2. Online test in basic disciplines (50 questions, maximum score - 100).

The participant who scored the highest points for the first and second rounds of the Olympiad was declared as the winner of the Olympiad in the individual championship. The university team that scored the highest amount of points for the first and second rounds of the Olympiad was determined as the winner of the Olympiad in the team championship.

Based on the results of Olympiad, the members of the committee determined the winners:
