The distance separating Almaty, Kazakhstan and Lincoln, Nebraska – some 6,500 miles – continues to shrink thanks to a burgeoning partnership in water sciences nurtured by researchers on both continents.
The economy in central Asia’s Kazakhstan is currently doing well these days, mainly from development of abundant petroleum and mineral deposits. The world’s largest landlocked country, formerly part of the Soviet Union, is investing some of this revenue toward building capacity in science and engineering research.
International interdisciplinary research can be difficult but also can be relatively easy and enjoyable. Such was the case when two Nebraska scientists visited Al-Farabi Kazakh National University to teach a 9-day workshop in ecotoxicology.
