The Department of World History, Historiography and Source Studies prepares specialists in three areas - world history, archival and document science, library science at three levels (bachelors, masters, doctoral studies).

The agreement on social partnership under the dual education program in the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been extended until 2028.

Changes have been made to the directions of work of the branch of the department in the Presidential Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan in accordance with the strategic plan of the university.

In 1963, the department created a specialized department for the preparation of historians, leading history classes in English and German.
In the early 90s, the Department of History of the Ancient World and the Middle Ages (Head of the Department of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor KT Zhumagulov), New and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries (Head of the Department, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor SM .Mashimbaev).
In order to optimize the educational process in 2007, the above-mentioned departments were united under the general title "Chair of World History", headed by Doctor of History, Professor KT Zhumagulov.
 
In 2011, the Department of Historiography and Source Studies was attached to the Department of World History (head of the department is Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor KT Zhumagulov).
Since 2016, the chair is headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor GS Sultangaliyeva.
Today the Department of World History, Historiography and Source Studies is the leading center for the training of highly qualified personnel in the RK for world history, historiography and source study, and provides scientific and methodological assistance to a number of universities in Kazakhstan.
The department serves the following specialties: 5В020300 - history, 6М020300 - history, 6Д020300 - history; 5В11400 - history, 6М11400 - history 5В051500 - archival studies, documentation and documentation support; 6M051500 - archival studies, documentation and documentation support; 5В091000 - librarianship.
  At present, the teaching faculty of the Department of World History, Historiography and Source Studies includes 9 doctors of historical sciences, professors, 12 Ph.D., associate professors, 2 PhD doctors. Among them, the winners of the Republican contest of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "The best teacher of the university", Doctor of History, prof. Zhumagulov K.T. (2006), Doctor of History, prof. GK Kokbaeva (2009), Doctor of History, prof. GSSultangaliyeva (2011), Doctor of History, prof. Mukhatova О.H. (2011). Since 2014, the Republican Center for the Study of World History (headed by Professor Zhumagulov KT) has been functioning at the department. Based on the results of the Center's research, monographs, textbooks and textbooks on world history issues were published, international conferences ("Actual problems of world history"), articles in international scientific publications included in the Scopus database and ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomson Reuters. New sources on world history in domestic and foreign archives have been revealed.
At the moment there are two scientific projects on fundamental researches of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan: 1167 / GF 4 "The Institute of Volosts in the Kazakh Steppe Management System of the XIX-early XX centuries: functions, activities and interaction with the Russian authorities" (head Professor Sultangalieva G.S. .) And 4817 / GF4 "The place and role of the Turkic civilization in the history of Eurasia" (head associate professor Kartabaeva ET)
The department has established partnership relations with the republican scientific organizations and centers - the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Central State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Central Archive of Film and Photo Documents and Sound Records of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
    In the framework of training the department has established scientific contacts with universities and scientific organizations of Germany (University of Göttingen, University of Tübingen), the USA (Iowa University, University of Nevada), Japan (University of Tokyo, Hokkaido University), Poland (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and University of Warsaw), France (Higher School of Social Sciences, Higher School of Political Science), Italy (La Sapienza University), Hong Kong (University of Hong Kong).
