International seminar "Central Asia at the crossroad of European and Asian political interests: 18-19 centuries." On the basis of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University

Within the framework of the project of the Russian Science Foundation “Central Asia in the international relations in 18-19 centuries”, the international seminar “Central Asia at the crossroad of European and Asian political interests: 18-19 centuries” will be held at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 20-22 August, 2019.

The purpose of the event is to discuss the possibility of a comprehensive study of international relations across Central Asia at a significant chronological period, when tectonic geopolitical changes took place in the region. The dynamic of international relations in Central Asia will be considered as a single region, will be made an attempt to assess the role of individual European and Asian subjects (Turkey, Iran, Bukhara, Khiva, Kokand, Kazakh zhuzes, etc.) of international relations in the development of the foreign policy situation in Central Asia.

Main topics for discussion:

1. The content of the concept “Central Asia” is a historical and geographical approaches to defining the region’s borders.

3. Central Asia as a socio-territorial community, subject and object of international relations in the 18-19 centuries.

4. “The Big Game” in Central Asia: going beyond the traditional framework

5. Kazakh zhuzes, peoples of Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, Bukhara emirate, Khiva and Kokand khanates at the crossroads of European and Asian interests

6. The content and nature of the evolution of the policy of the Russian empire in the relation to the peoples and states that were within its sphere of interest (Turkmen, Bukhara, Khiva, Ili region, etc.)

7. Formal legal and actual status of protectorates and other conquered territories in Central Asia.

Scientists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Poland, and the United States will take part in the seminar.

According to the results of the seminar will be published a collection of articles with indexation in the RSCI.
